The second was the way he looked at her. He wasn’t surprised to see her there. He wasn’t uncomfortable. He wasn’t even trying to move away.

He looked relieved.

That was what finally broke something in me.

The party was supposed to celebrate Adrian’s birthday early. His actual birthday was two days away, but he had insisted on having friends over that weekend because several people were traveling later. I had spent most of the afternoon helping prepare food, arranging glasses, and pretending I wasn’t exhausted from work.

Three years together had taught me how easily I could disappear inside Adrian’s plans.

He had been charming when we met. Confident without being loud. He remembered small things. He knew I hated overly sweet coffee and loved old movies. He used to send me photographs of the sky when he drove home late because he knew I liked sunsets.

Somewhere along the way, those small gestures became occasional favors, and the favors became things he expected me to appreciate without asking for more.

I had noticed the change long before that party. I simply kept finding reasons to excuse it.

“He’s stressed.”

“He’s busy.”

“He doesn’t mean it.”

“He’ll come around.”

I had said those things so often that they had started sounding less like explanations and more like prayers.

That night, I was carrying a tray of drinks from the kitchen when I heard laughter from the living room. I recognized Adrian’s immediately. It was the easy laugh he used around people he wanted to impress.

Then I heard Sophia.

I stopped.

She was sitting beside him on the sofa.

Sophia had been around for months. She worked with Adrian on a consulting project, or at least that was how he described her. Whenever I asked how often they worked together, he accused me of being suspicious.

“She’s a colleague, Paula.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You didn’t have to.”

That conversation had happened more than once.

Now she was wearing a black dress and leaning toward him as if the two of them had arrived together.

Maybe they had.

I placed the tray on the table.

Adrian glanced at me.

“Hey.”

Just that.

Hey.

No explanation.

No introduction.

Sophia smiled.

“Hi, Paula.”

I looked at her.

“Hi.”

Adrian stood and took my hand.

“You remember Sophia.”

“Of course.”

His fingers tightened around mine.

“Good.”

I studied his face.

He wouldn’t meet my eyes.

That was the first clue.

The second came ten minutes later.

Someone asked Adrian how long Sophia had been working with him. He answered casually, “Almost a year.”

I looked at him.

A year.

He had told me they had met six months earlier.

It was a small discrepancy. Six months. A harmless detail, perhaps.

Except Adrian had always been very precise when correcting me.

I remembered every time he had said, “That was in March, not April.”

Now I wondered why he suddenly couldn’t remember when Sophia had entered his life.

I went outside for air.

The backyard was colder than I expected.
