Tears. Accusations. A dramatic phone call. Maybe a message long enough to make him feel guilty for an hour before I eventually apologized.

Instead, I stood in our bedroom at two in the morning and folded clothes.

The apartment was silent except for the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

I pulled one suitcase from the closet.

Then another.

My hands were steady.

That surprised me.

Three years of memories were scattered through that apartment. Photographs on shelves. A mug Adrian had given me. A jacket of his hanging behind the bedroom door. Tickets from a concert we had attended during our first year together.

I touched one photograph.

We were standing beside a lake, both of us laughing.

I looked happy.

Maybe I had been.

But photographs never show what happens five minutes after the camera is put away.

I opened the drawer where I kept important documents.

Passport.

Identification.

Bank information.

Employment records.

I gathered everything.

Then I paused.

There was one folder missing.

The folder containing several documents Adrian had once asked me to sign.

He had said they were related to a financial arrangement.

I had signed them because I trusted him.

The memory bothered me.

I searched the desk.

Nothing.

I checked the filing cabinet.

Nothing.

Then I heard the front door.

I froze.

Adrian.

He entered without turning on the lights.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

He finally noticed the suitcase.

“What are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

He laughed softly.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you going?”

“I don’t know yet.”

He looked at the suitcase.

Then at me.

“You’re really going to walk out?”

“I already did.”

His expression hardened.

“This is because of the post?”

I stared at him.

“Partly.”

“Paula, I told you things were complicated.”

“You announced another woman as the person you wanted to spend your life with.”

“I was going to talk to you.”

“When?”

He had no answer.

I zipped the suitcase.

He stepped closer.

“You’re being emotional.”

“No.”

“You are.”

“I’m hurt.”

“That’s the same thing.”

“No. It isn’t.”

He looked annoyed.

That was when I saw it clearly.

He wasn't devastated.

He was irritated.

The difference mattered.

“You don’t even understand what you’re doing,” he said.

“I understand that I’m leaving.”

“You’ll come back.”

I stopped.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

His confidence was almost calm.

“You always do.”

I stared at him.

“Maybe I won’t.”

He smiled.

“You will.”

I wanted to argue.

Instead, I picked up the suitcase.

He moved aside.

“Fine.”

That word followed me to the door.

Fine.

As though he were granting permission.

As though my leaving were a temporary inconvenience.

I walked down the stairs.

The night air hit my face.

I expected to feel shattered.

Instead, I felt empty.

That was somehow easier.

I spent the first night in a small hotel.

The next morning, I called my friend and told her I needed somewhere temporary.

She had a spare room, but she was leaving town for several weeks.

“You can stay there,” she said.

I accepted.

Two days later, I moved into a small apartment across town.

It was nothing like the place Adrian and I had shared.

The kitchen was narrow.

The bedroom barely fit the bed.

The living room had one window overlooking another building.

But when I closed the door behind me, nobody knew me there.

Nobody knew I was Adrian Shaw’s girlfriend.

Nobody knew I had been replaced at a party.

Nobody knew I had spent years trying to make a relationship work.

For the first time in a long time, I was simply Paula.

I sat on the floor because I hadn’t bought furniture yet.

Two suitcases rested beside me.

My phone remained silent.

At first, I thought that was because Adrian was giving me space.

Then I remembered him saying, You’ll come back.

He was waiting.

So I turned the phone off.

The next morning, I began looking for work.

I had resigned from my previous position partly because Adrian had convinced me that his plans required flexibility.

Now I regretted it.

I opened my laptop.

My résumé looked unfamiliar.

I had spent so much time thinking about our future that I had forgotten to build my own.

I found several openings and applied to three.

Then I sat there staring at the screen.

A knock came from the hallway.

I opened the door cautiously.

A man stood across from me holding a small toolbox.

“Sorry,” he said. “Are you the new tenant?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Matthew. Apartment across the hall.”

He pointed toward his door.

“Maintenance said the lock on your unit was sticking.”

I tested it.

He was right.

“It does.”

“Give me five minutes.”

He fixed it quickly.

I thanked him.

He looked around the nearly empty apartment.

“You just moved in?”

“Yesterday.”

“Furniture coming?”

“Eventually.”

He smiled.

“That sounds optimistic.”

I laughed despite myself.

It was the first laugh I'd had since the party.

He noticed.

“Better.”

“What?”

“You looked like you needed that.”

I didn't answer.

He didn't ask why.

That mattered.

Instead, he packed his tools.

“If you need the grocery store, it's three blocks east. Pharmacy is two streets over.”

“Thanks.”

“And don't use the laundromat on the corner.”

“Why?”

“The dryers eat socks.”

I smiled.

“That's oddly specific.”

“I've lost seven.”

He left.

I closed the door.

For some reason, the apartment felt less unfamiliar.

That evening, I turned my phone back on.

Twenty-three missed calls.

Most were Adrian.

There were messages too.

CALL ME.

WE NEED TO TALK.

YOU CAN'T JUST DISAPPEAR.

I scrolled further.

Then I found one from Mark, Adrian's closest friend.

Are you okay?

I didn't respond.

Another arrived.

He thinks you're coming back.

I stared at the screen.

Then another.

He's already telling people you two just had a fight.

I locked the phone.

That was when I realized Adrian had already begun rewriting what happened.

Not publicly enough to contradict the post.

Just enough to make himself look reasonable.

I deleted the messages.

Two days later, his birthday arrived.

I remembered the date because I had spent weeks planning what to buy him.

A watch.

I had ordered it before everything collapsed.

The package arrived at my old address.

I almost laughed.

Instead, I contacted the seller and changed the delivery.

The watch arrived that afternoon.

I opened the box.

It was expensive.

Thoughtful.

Exactly the kind of gift I used to give him.

I stared at it for a long time.

Then I put it back in the box.

I wasn't going to return it to him.

I wasn't going to send it.

I simply closed the lid.

That night, I made a decision.

I deleted our photographs from my phone.

Not all at once.

One by one.

I kept a few because deleting every memory felt dishonest.

But the pictures that made me want to go back went into the trash.

At 11:47, my phone rang.

Adrian.

I watched it vibrate.

Then stop.

A minute later, another call.

Then another.

Finally, a message appeared.

You know I'll forgive you when you calm down.

I stared at those words.

He thought I needed his forgiveness.

For leaving him.

I almost responded.

Instead, I deleted the message.

The following morning, I woke before sunrise.

For the first time in weeks, I slept without checking whether Adrian had messaged me.

I made coffee.

It was terrible.

I drank it anyway.

Then I opened my laptop and found a job posting for an administrative coordinator at a small project-management company.

The salary was lower than my old position.

But it offered stability.

Remote work several days a week.

A fresh start.

I sent my résumé.

Ten minutes later, an email appeared.

We would like to interview you tomorrow.

I read it twice.

Then I whispered, “Okay.”

A small smile came.

It wasn't happiness.

Not yet.

But it was possibility.

At noon, I went downstairs.

I had almost nothing in the kitchen.

Halfway down the stairs, I heard footsteps.

Matthew appeared.

“Grocery run?”

“Yes.”

“Which store?”

“I don't know.”

He laughed.

“You really don't know anything around here.”

“No.”

“Come on.”

We walked three blocks.

He showed me the bakery, the pharmacy, the bus stop, the grocery store, and a little park hidden between two apartment buildings.

He talked easily.

I listened.

He never asked why I had moved.

He never asked whether I had a boyfriend.

He never asked about the dark circles beneath my eyes.

At the grocery store entrance, he handed me a cart.

“Welcome to the neighborhood.”

I smiled.

“That's your official welcome?”

“I'm still working on the speech.”

For the first time in weeks, I laughed without forcing it.

That evening, I cooked pasta.

It was awful.

The sauce was too thick, the noodles were overcooked, and I forgot salt.

A knock came.

Matthew stood outside.

“I smelled something burning.”

I looked at the plate.

“That's dinner.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Bold.”

“Go away.”

He laughed.

I closed the door.

And for the first time since leaving Adrian, the silence inside my apartment didn't feel like punishment.

It felt like room.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: While Adrian Waited for Me
