Because the next few weeks may become unpleasant.”

She was right.

The following Monday, my credit report arrived.

Rachel had requested a full investigation into every account associated with my identity.

The report was longer than I expected.

Most of it was ordinary.

Then I saw an account I had never seen before.

A business credit line.

Opened two years earlier.

My name appeared as an authorized officer.

I stared at the page.

“I didn't open this.”

Rachel nodded.

“I know.”

She pointed to the date.

“Look at when it was established.”

I did.

Two weeks after Adrian had asked me to sign those mysterious documents at our kitchen table.

My stomach tightened.

“What happened two weeks later?”

“According to the business records, a property-related payment was made.”

“Which property?”

Rachel slid another page toward me.

The apartment.

I stared at the address.

The same place where I had lived with Adrian.

The same place where he had told me I was lucky to have him.

The same place he had intended to transfer to Sophia.

Everything was connected.

Rachel circled a transaction.

“This payment went through the business account.”

“But I didn't know there was a business account.”

“That is the problem.”

I leaned back.

“So he used my name to make payments on property he planned to control.”

“That's what the records suggest.”

“And the money?”

“Some of it came from accounts connected to you.”

I looked at her.

“My personal account?”

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

“How much?”

“Over the course of eighteen months, approximately forty-eight thousand dollars.”

I closed my eyes.

Forty-eight thousand.

Money I had believed was going toward household expenses.

Money I had thought Adrian was managing.

I remembered the months when he had complained that I wasn't contributing enough.

I remembered him telling me I spent too much.

I remembered cutting back on groceries.

Skipping clothes.

Putting off dental work.

All while he was moving money through accounts I didn't even know existed.

I opened my eyes.

“I want every transaction.”

“You'll get them.”

“I want copies.”

“You'll have them.”

“And I want to know where the money went.”

Rachel nodded.

“That will take time.”

“I have time.”

For the first time, I meant it.

Later that afternoon, Sophia called.

I almost ignored her.

Instead, I answered.

“Why are you calling?”

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A key.”

I frowned.

“What key?”

“Adrian gave me one last year.”

“To what?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why does it matter?”

“Because I found the matching number written in one of his notebooks.”

My pulse quickened.

“Where is the key?”

“With me.”

“Bring it to Rachel.”

“I can.”

“And don't give it to anyone else.”

“I won't.”

She hesitated.

“Paula?”

“Yes?”

“I am sorry.”

I looked out the window.

“I know.”

It wasn't forgiveness.

But it wasn't hatred anymore either.

It was something colder.

Acceptance.

That evening, I met Sophia at Rachel's office.

Sophia placed a small brass key on the table.

There was a number engraved on it.

417.

Rachel examined it.

“Do you know what this opens?”

Sophia shook her head.

“Adrian told me it was for a storage unit.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Rachel looked at me.

“Do you?”

I searched my memory.

Then something surfaced.

“His old warehouse.”

Rachel looked at Sophia.

“You knew about a warehouse?”

Sophia nodded.

“He said he used it for equipment.”

Rachel wrote something down.

“Address?”

Sophia provided it.

I recognized the street.

Adrian had taken me there once.

He had told me it was nothing important.

The warehouse had been nearly empty.

At least, that's what I remembered.

Rachel stood.

“We aren't going there tonight.”

Sophia looked disappointed.

“Why not?”

“Because if there is evidence inside, I want the proper procedure followed.”

I nodded.

That night, I barely slept.

The next morning, Rachel arranged for an authorized inspection.

The warehouse stood behind a row of industrial buildings.

The lock was old.

The key fit.

Inside were shelves covered with boxes.

Documents.

Receipts.

Old computers.

Shipping records.

And three metal cabinets.

The first contained business paperwork.

The second contained property records.

The third was locked.

Rachel looked at the key.

“417.”

The key opened it.

Inside were folders.

Hundreds of them.

My name appeared on several.

I reached for one.

Rachel stopped me.

“Gloves.”

I put them on.

The folder contained copies of my identification.

Old tax documents.

Bank information.

A photocopy of my signature.

I felt something inside me go completely still.

“He kept copies of everything.”

Rachel's expression hardened.

“Yes.”

Another folder contained information about Sophia.

Another contained Daniel.

Another contained property documents.

At the bottom was a thick envelope marked PRIVATE.

Rachel opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was Adrian's.

I read it slowly.

The letter discussed selling the apartment after transferring ownership.

But there was one sentence that made my blood run cold.

Once Paula is removed from the property, the remaining liability can be cleared through the sale.

I looked at Rachel.

“Removed?”

She nodded.

“That's how he viewed this.”

Not as our home.

Not as a life we had built.

As an obstacle.

We continued searching.

Then Rachel found a second letter.

This one was addressed to Sophia.

It promised her a portion of the proceeds.

But beneath the promise was another line.

After the sale, Paula will have no claim.

Sophia read it.

Her face drained of color.

“He lied to me too.”

“Yes,” Rachel said.

Sophia sat down.

For several seconds, none of us spoke.

Then Daniel arrived.

He had been asked to come because Rachel needed clarification about several company documents.

He walked into the warehouse and saw the folders.

His face changed.

“You found it.”

“What is it?” I asked.

He looked at me.

“The reason he was so desperate.”

Rachel handed him the financial statement.

Daniel read it.

“He's worse off than I thought.”

“How bad?”

“Bad enough that the apartment may be the only asset he can sell quickly.”

I felt cold.

“Then that's why he wanted me gone.”

Daniel nodded.

“But there is something else.”

He reached into his coat and removed a folded document.

“This came from my father's files.”

I opened it.

It was an old agreement.

Adrian's father had apparently loaned him money years earlier.

The debt had never been fully repaid.

The apartment had been listed as collateral.

I looked at Rachel.

“Does that mean—”

“It means Adrian didn't own the apartment outright.”

Rachel took the document.

“And if this agreement is valid, he may have been attempting to sell an asset he didn't have authority to dispose of.”

The pieces were finally aligning.

The debt.

The hidden company.

The account opened in my name.

The apartment.

Sophia.

The secret warehouse.

And the photograph Adrian had posted in front of everyone.

He hadn't simply been replacing me.

He had been trying to remove me from a financial structure he had built around my identity.

But Rachel wasn't satisfied.

“There is still one missing piece.”

“What?”

“The original transfer documents.”

“Where are they?”

Rachel looked toward the locked cabinet.

“We haven't found them.”

I remembered the folder I had signed three years earlier.

The one Adrian had told me not to worry about.

Suddenly I knew where it might be.

“His office.”

Rachel looked at me.

“You're sure?”

“No.”

I swallowed.

“But I know where he kept documents he didn't want me to see.”

“Where?”

I looked at the warehouse door.

“In the locked drawer beneath his desk.”

Rachel nodded.

“Then tomorrow, we get a warrant.”

I stared at her.

“A warrant?”

“Yes.”

For the first time since this began, the word sounded real.

This wasn't an argument anymore.

It wasn't a breakup.

It wasn't revenge.

It was a case.

And Adrian had just given us the evidence we needed to begin building it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Adrian Tried to Turn the Investigation Against Me, Until
