7 – The Safe-Deposit Box Held the Missing Document, but Its Contents Revealed Adrian Had Been Planning Much More Than a Simple Escape

The safe-deposit box was at a bank I had never used.

That fact bothered me more than anything else.

I had no memory of opening it.

Yet the bank had my identification on file.

My signature appeared on the original application.

Rachel sat beside me while the bank manager explained the access history.

“Mr. Shaw accessed the box several times.”

“How many?” Rachel asked.

“Seven.”

I looked at the manager.

“Did I ever access it?”

He checked.

“No.”

My throat tightened.

“Then how did Adrian get access?”

The manager looked uncomfortable.

“He was listed as an authorized representative.”

I turned toward Rachel.

She was already writing.

“Can we open it?”

The manager nodded.

Two employees accompanied us into the vault.

The box was small.

Gray metal.

Ordinary.

But when the lid opened, I understood why Adrian had been so confident.

Inside were documents.

Property agreements.

Bank records.

Company registration papers.

And one envelope with my full name.

Rachel put on gloves.

She opened it.

Inside was the original transfer agreement for the apartment.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

But the date was wrong.

I knew immediately.

I hadn't been in the city that day.

Rachel noticed my expression.

“You recognize the date?”

“I was with my mother.”

“Can you prove it?”

“Yes.”

“Then we have a problem for him.”

She placed the document in an evidence sleeve.

Beneath it was another paper.

A power-of-attorney document.

My name again.

My signature again.

I stared at it.

“I never signed this.”

Rachel nodded.

“That's what I expected.”

Then we found the document that changed the case.

A sale agreement.

The apartment had already been prepared for sale.

A buyer had been identified.

The proposed price was nearly seven hundred thousand dollars.

The closing date was six weeks away.

I stared at the page.

Six weeks.

Adrian had been planning this before the party.

Long before he announced Sophia.

He hadn't wanted to leave me.

He had wanted to remove me.

Rachel looked at the date.

“He planned this before you moved out.”

I nodded.

“So the party was designed to make me leave.”

“Yes.”

The realization was devastating.

Not because I had doubted it.

Because now it was documented.

The humiliation had been part of the plan.

The flowers.

The messages.

The sudden declaration.

Sophia.

Everything.

I remembered Adrian telling me I would come back.

He had been confident because he believed I would eventually return and sign whatever he needed.

Except I had not.

And now his plan was collapsing.

There was another envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Adrian's handwriting.

The note was addressed to Victor.

If Paula leaves voluntarily, everything becomes easier.

I read the sentence twice.

Rachel took the note.

“Don't touch anything else.”

I stepped back.

The bank manager looked uneasy.

“Is everything all right?”

“No,” Rachel said.

“But we're getting closer.”

We left the bank with copies secured.

Outside, I stood on the sidewalk.

The city moved around me.

People hurried past.

Cars stopped at lights.

A woman carried flowers across the street.

For some reason, I thought of the roses Adrian had left outside my apartment.

He had tried to make the gesture look romantic.

Now I understood it differently.

He wanted to make me feel guilty.

He wanted to remind me of the version of him I had loved.

He wanted me emotionally distracted while the legal machinery continued behind me.

Rachel touched my arm.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Don't answer automatically.”

I looked at her.

“I don't know.”

“That is more honest.”

We returned to her office.

The next stage began immediately.

The documents were submitted.

The property transfer was challenged.

The financial investigation expanded.

The buyer of the apartment was contacted.

The sale was suspended.

Adrian's accounts were placed under review.

For the first time, he had nowhere to move money.

Then his lawyer requested a meeting.

Rachel agreed.

I attended.

Adrian entered the conference room ten minutes late.

He looked different.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His face was pale.

He sat across from me.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he looked at me.

“You really did this.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He frowned.

“You destroyed my company.”

“You did.”

“You froze my accounts.”

“You did.”

“You took the apartment.”

“I didn't take it.”

He stared at me.

“Then what are you doing?”

“Stopping you from selling something you had no right to sell.”

His lawyer leaned toward him.

“Adrian.”

He ignored him.

“You could have talked to me.”

I almost laughed.

“We did talk.”

“I mean before all this.”

“You mean before I found out?”

His jaw tightened.

“I was trying to fix things.”

“No.”

“You don't know what I was dealing with.”

“I know what you did.”

He looked at me.

“You still don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

He leaned forward.

“I was drowning.”

That was the first honest thing he had said.

“I owed people money,” he continued. “The company was failing. I had creditors calling. Everything was collapsing.”

“And your solution was to use me.”

“I was going to pay you back.”

“When?”

“When things turned around.”

“And if they didn't?”

He had no answer.

I looked at him.

“You never intended to tell me.”

His eyes dropped.

“No.”

The silence was complete.

Then he whispered, “I thought you'd leave if you knew.”

“You were right.”

His eyes lifted.

“But you were wrong about why.”

I stood.

Rachel touched my arm.

“We're done here.”

As I walked toward the door, Adrian called after me.

“Paula.”

I stopped.

He sounded smaller than I had ever heard him.

“I loved you.”

I turned.

“I believe you.”

His face changed.

“Then why?”

“Because loving someone doesn't excuse using them.”

I left.

Outside, I cried.

Not because I wanted him back.

Because I finally understood how much of my life I had spent defending someone who had never defended me.

Three days later, the investigators found another account.

This one belonged to a company registered under a different name.

The account contained money from the proposed apartment sale.

A deposit had already been made.

The buyer had paid a substantial amount.

Adrian had moved it before the sale.

Rachel called me immediately.

“There's a complication.”

“What?”

“The money is gone.”

“Gone where?”

“Overseas.”

My heart sank.

“Can they trace it?”

“They're working on it.”

“How much?”

“Two hundred thousand.”

I closed my eyes.

“That was the deposit?”

“Yes.”

“Then the buyer will want it back.”

“Correct.”

“And Adrian doesn't have it.”

“Correct.”

I understood.

If he couldn't recover the money, everything would collapse.

Not just the sale.

The business.

The debts.

The people he owed.

Everything.

That night, Sophia came to my apartment.

She stood in the hallway holding a box.

“I found this.”

“What is it?”

“Something Adrian gave me.”

I opened the box.

Inside was a second phone.

I looked at her.

“He told me to keep it hidden.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Rachel arrived twenty minutes later.

She examined the phone.

It contained deleted messages.

Most were between Adrian and Sophia.

But one conversation was different.

Adrian had been communicating with someone overseas.

The messages discussed moving money.

Then came one sentence.

Once Paula signs the final release, we can finish.

Rachel stared at the screen.

“Final release?”

I felt cold.

“What is that?”

She scrolled further.

A document was attached.

I opened it.

It was a release of all claims.

My name appeared at the top.

The signature line was blank.

Rachel looked at me.

“This is what he needed from you.”

“For the apartment?”

“For everything.”

I understood.

The party.

The humiliation.

The roses.

The pressure.

The claim that I would come back.

He had never needed my forgiveness.

He needed my signature.

And I had almost given it to him once.

Rachel looked at the phone again.

“There is one more message.”

“What does it say?”

She read it silently.

Then looked up.

“He expected you to come back within ten days.”

I stared.

“How long has it been?”

“Twenty-three days.”

For the first time, I smiled.

Not because everything was over.

It wasn't.

But because Adrian's plan had already failed.

And he hadn't realized it yet.
