No unknown numbers appeared on my phone. Adrian's messages stopped. Even Sophia remained silent.

For the first time since everything began, I could make coffee without wondering what disaster might arrive before I finished the cup.

Rachel warned me not to mistake silence for resolution.

“The investigation is still active,” she said during our next meeting. “The property issue is only one part of this.”

“I know.”

“There are still outstanding financial records.”

“What are we missing?”

She turned her laptop toward me.

“An account.”

I frowned.

“We already found the accounts.”

“Most of them.”

She opened a spreadsheet.

“Victor's records show a recurring transfer that doesn't appear in any of the accounts we've traced.”

“How much?”

“Between eight and twelve thousand dollars at a time.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where did it go?”

“We don't know.”

“Then how do we know it existed?”

“Victor's ledger.”

She enlarged the relevant entries.

Every payment had been marked with the same abbreviation.

P.R.

I stared at it.

“What does that mean?”

“Victor doesn't know.”

I leaned closer.

“Could it be a person?”

“Possibly.”

“Or a property?”

“Possibly.”

Rachel closed the laptop.

“That's why we're not finished.”

I left her office with an uneasy feeling.

That evening, Matthew noticed immediately.

“You're thinking too loudly.”

I smiled.

“I didn't know that was possible.”

“It is with you.”

We sat on the balcony outside my apartment.

I told him about the missing account.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he asked, “Do you want my opinion?”

“Yes.”

“Then stop trying to figure it out alone.”

I looked at him.

“That's your opinion?”

“Yes.”

“Very profound.”

“I charge by the hour.”

I laughed.

The laugh felt natural now.

That mattered more than I could explain.

Two days later, Rachel called again.

“We found P.R.”

I sat upright.

“Who is it?”

“Property Reserve.”

“What does that mean?”

“It's a private holding company.”

“Owned by Adrian?”

“No.”

My stomach tightened.

“Then who?”

Rachel paused.

“Your father.”

I couldn't speak.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

I drove to her office.

The records were spread across the conference table.

My father's name appeared on the incorporation documents.

So did another name.

Adrian.

I stared at the papers.

“What am I looking at?”

“Your father created the holding company years ago.”

“Why?”

“To protect his investment in the apartment.”

I shook my head.

“I knew nothing about this.”

Rachel nodded.

“That may be because the company wasn't created for you to manage.”

“What happened to it?”

“Adrian became involved later.”

I looked at the dates.

The company had been established before I met Adrian.

But Adrian had been added as an authorized manager three years after that.

Three years.

The same period when we had started dating.

I looked at Rachel.

“Why would my father let him in?”

“Your father says Adrian convinced him he could improve the property's value.”

I stared at the document.

“So Adrian wasn't hiding the property from my father.”

“Not initially.”

“He was hiding what he did with it.”

“Exactly.”

That distinction mattered.

My father had trusted Adrian with limited authority.

Adrian had turned that authority into something much larger.

Rachel showed me another record.

A loan.

The amount was substantial.

The borrower was Property Reserve.

The lender was a private investment group.

I recognized the address of the collateral.

The apartment.

I felt cold.

“Did Adrian borrow against it?”

“Yes.”

“Without my father's permission?”

“That's what we're investigating.”

I sat down.

“How much?”

Rachel told me.

I stared at the table.

The amount was larger than the previous debt.

Much larger.

“How could he possibly think he could repay that?”

“He couldn't.”

“Then why take it?”

Rachel looked at me.

“To keep everything else alive.”

The answer was simple.

The business had been failing.

The property had become his emergency source of money.

He borrowed against it.

Moved money.

Covered old debts.

Opened accounts.

Used my identity.

Then planned to sell the apartment to make everything disappear.

Except the numbers never worked.

They only moved the collapse farther into the future.

I thought about the first year Adrian and I had lived together.

He had seemed successful.

Confident.

Secure.

I had believed him.

Now I understood that much of that confidence had been borrowed.

That afternoon, my father came to my apartment.

He looked older than I remembered.

“I should have told you.”

I opened the door wider.

“Come in.”

He sat at the kitchen table.

“I thought Adrian was capable.”

“So did I.”

“I trusted him with something I should have protected myself.”

“You trusted him.”

“That isn't an excuse.”

“No.”

He looked down.

“Your mother warned me.”

I almost smiled.

“She usually sees things before everyone else.”

He nodded.

“She didn't like Adrian.”

“I wish I'd listened.”

“So do I.”

We sat quietly.

Then he reached into his coat.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“What is this?”

“Something Adrian gave me three years ago.”

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

My father's face changed.

“I never understood why he gave me that.”

I read it.

It was a request from Adrian asking my father to authorize additional control over Property Reserve.

The request had been refused.

But beneath it was a second page.

A private agreement.

Adrian had apparently created a separate arrangement with one of the investors.

My father's signature wasn't there.

Mine wasn't either.

Yet my name appeared repeatedly.

I looked up.

“He planned this before I knew anything.”

“Yes.”

That was the part that hurt.

The deception hadn't begun when Sophia appeared.

It had begun when Adrian realized I could be useful.

I called Rachel.

She came over that evening.

She reviewed the papers carefully.

“This may change the scope of the case.”

“How?”

“The loan agreement could establish intent.”

“Intent to do what?”

“To use the property as collateral without proper authority.”

She paused.

“And there's another issue.”

“What?”

“If Adrian represented to the lender that you consented, that could constitute another act of fraud.”

My hands went cold.

“Then we need to find out what he told them.”

Rachel nodded.

The answer came sooner than expected.

The lender produced a digital copy of an email.

It had been sent from Adrian's account.

The message stated that I had agreed to the loan structure.

Attached was a scanned authorization.

My signature.

Again.

Forged.

I stared at it.

“How many times did he use my signature?”

Rachel didn't answer immediately.

“Enough that we're going to stop counting until the forensic review is complete.”

I looked away.

For years, I had thought the worst thing Adrian had done was betray me with Sophia.

That now seemed almost insignificant.

He had built an entire financial system around the assumption that my name belonged to him.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

At 3:12 in the morning, my phone rang.

It was Victor.

“Paula?”

“Yes.”

“I found something.”

“What?”

“Adrian had another storage account.”

“Where?”

“Not a warehouse.”

“Then where?”

“A private office.”

My heart began beating faster.

“What is inside?”

“I don't know.”

“Why are you calling me?”

“Because there's a box with your name on it.”

I sat up.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Where is the office?”

He gave me the address.

It was across town.

I recognized the building.

Adrian had taken me there once.

He had told me it was a temporary office.

I had never questioned him.

Now I understood why.

Rachel arrived before sunrise.

We went together.

The office had been abandoned.

Inside, investigators found several boxes.

One contained old contracts.

Another held company records.

The third had my name.

Rachel opened it.

Inside was a passport-sized photograph of me.

A copy of my driver's license.

A credit application.

A bank authorization.

And a handwritten list.

My name appeared at the top.

Underneath were words that made my stomach turn.

Accounts to establish.

Rachel read it silently.

Then she looked at me.

“This predates some of the accounts we've found.”

“How far back?”

She checked the date.

Three years and four months.

I remembered that month.

It was the month Adrian had first told me he was serious about our future.

The month he had met my father.

The month I had believed our relationship was becoming permanent.

He had been planning.

I had been falling in love.

The investigator found one final item.

A sealed envelope.

Rachel opened it.

Inside was a letter from Adrian to himself.

Not to me.

Not to Sophia.

To himself.

The first line read:

If Paula ever discovers the structure, leave before she can challenge it.

I felt something inside me go numb.

Rachel folded the paper.

“We have enough to show this wasn't accidental.”

I looked at the abandoned office.

At the boxes.

At my name.

At the documents created before I had any reason to distrust him.

For three years, I had believed I was living beside the person who knew me best.

The truth was much darker.

He had been studying me.

Learning what I trusted.

Learning what I signed.

Learning what I would tolerate.

And now, after all this time, we had finally found the beginning.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Oldest Document Changed Everything, Because It Proved
