1 – I Was Sixty-Nine When I Learned My Stepson Had Been Using My Name, And My Wife Had Believed His Lies for Years

I was sixty-nine years old when I discovered that someone in my family had been using my identity.

That was difficult enough to accept.

What hurt worse was learning how long my wife had been living with a lie about me.

Her name was Pam.

We had been married for eight years.

And until that evening, I believed we knew each other well enough to recognize when something was wrong.

I was mistaken.

I sat at the kitchen table with a folder in front of me.

Pam sat across from me.

Her son, Jordan, was there too.

He was forty-one years old, but the way he kept looking toward his mother reminded me of a boy hoping somebody else would explain his trouble.

I had spent the afternoon gathering documents.

Three credit-card applications.

Account statements.

A credit report.

And a handwritten list of transactions that had raised more questions than answers.

I had not expected to bring any of it home.

I had certainly not expected to hear my wife explain why she believed I had been secretly gambling.

Yet there we were.

Pam had both hands folded together on the table.

She looked frightened.

I asked her why she had believed what Jordan told her.

She didn’t answer right away.

Then she said he had convinced her that I was losing money at casinos.

Not a little money.

Enough to put our future at risk.

I stared at her.

I had never told Pam that I gambled because I didn’t gamble.

I had never hidden casino debts because there were no casino debts to hide.

But Jordan had apparently built an entire story around the idea.

Pam believed I was driving to Oklahoma to gamble.

She believed I was ashamed of what I was doing.

And she believed her son was trying to save me from the consequences.

I looked at Jordan.

He avoided my eyes.

“Who told you I was gambling?”

He shifted in his chair.

“Somebody mentioned it.”

“Who?”

“I can’t remember.”

That answer bothered me more than I expected.

For almost three years, he had been accusing me of something that could destroy a marriage.

And now he couldn’t remember where the accusation came from.

I asked whether he had ever actually watched me gamble.

He said no.

I asked whether he’d ever seen me put money on a table or use a slot machine.

Again, no.

I asked whether he could point to one legitimate charge proving I’d been at a casino.

He looked down.

“No.”

Pam moved her chair a little closer to the table.

I could hear the wooden legs scrape across the floor.

“Jordan, what are you saying?”

He rubbed his face.

Then he said something that changed the conversation.

“I told you that because I needed help.”

I waited.

He looked at his mother.

“I figured I could straighten it out before anybody knew.”

Pam stared at him.

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then she asked whether he had invented the story about me.

Jordan didn’t give her a clear answer.

He talked about being under pressure.

About bills.

About how difficult things had become.

But he never denied it.

I could see Pam beginning to understand.

And I hated watching it happen.

Not because I felt sorry for Jordan.

Because I knew what it meant for her.

She had spent years believing something terrible about her husband.

She had taken money out of her retirement.

She had convinced herself she was doing the right thing.

And her own son had let her continue.

“How much have you been giving him?” I asked.

She looked embarrassed.

“Seven hundred a month.”

I stared at her.

“Every month?”

She nodded.

“For almost three years.”

I looked toward the folder.

I had known about some of the payments before coming home.

But hearing her say the amount aloud made it harder to ignore.

Seven hundred dollars might not sound enormous to everyone.

To Pam, it mattered.

She had worked for her retirement.

She had saved that money because she believed she would need it when she stopped earning a regular paycheck.

Jordan knew that.

He knew exactly what he was asking her to sacrifice.

Yet he had taken the money anyway.

I asked Pam why she hadn’t come to me.

She wiped beneath one eye.

“Jordan said you wouldn’t admit anything.”

I felt something settle heavily in my chest.

He hadn’t merely accused me.

He had prepared an explanation for why I would deny the accusation.

That was how thoroughly he had thought it through.

If I said I wasn’t gambling, I was supposedly lying.

If I worked late, I was supposedly hiding something.

If I didn’t discuss every detail of my finances, that became further evidence.

There was no honest answer I could have given.

Because nobody had asked me the question.

I looked at Pam.

“Did you ever think I deserved to know what was being said about me?”

She lowered her head.

I didn’t need her to answer.

Jordan became irritated.

He said we were acting as though he’d done something unforgivable.

He said he had only needed time.

He said everybody made financial mistakes.

Then he complained that I didn’t understand what ordinary people were going through.

That almost made me smile.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he was sitting in my kitchen telling me I didn’t understand financial hardship.

I had spent nearly thirty years building a storage business.

Three lots.

Hundreds of units.

More broken gates, leaking roofs, late payments, and difficult winters than I could count.

I knew what financial pressure looked like.

I had seen it in customers who came into my office asking for another week to pay their rent.

I had watched people pack furniture into storage units because they could no longer afford their houses.

I had seen men sell tools they needed for work.

I had watched elderly couples struggle to decide which possessions were worth keeping.

Sometimes I let a customer pay late.

Sometimes I helped somebody carry a heavy cabinet.

Sometimes I simply listened.

I couldn’t fix everybody’s problems.

But I had learned that trouble did not excuse dishonesty.

And I had learned that being desperate did not give somebody ownership of another person’s money.

I told Jordan that.

He rolled his eyes.

He said he’d heard enough speeches.

Then he asked whether we could stop talking about it.

I opened the folder.

“No. We haven’t finished.”

He stared at the papers.

His face changed.

I laid the first application on the table.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Each had been submitted using my personal information.

My name.

My Social Security number.

And a signature that I did not recognize as my own.

Jordan reached toward one of the pages.

I moved it back.

“Where did you find those?”

“They’re connected to accounts opened in my name.”

He sat back.

“Those aren’t yours.”

“Then why is my identity on them?”

He said nothing.

I could hear the refrigerator running.

Pam watched us without speaking.

I had brought those records because I wanted answers.

But as I looked at Jordan, I realized something else.

The documents frightened him.

Not because he was worried about what had happened to me.

Because he hadn’t expected me to find them.

That was when I understood I was dealing with more than a family argument.

Someone had obtained credit using my identity.

Someone had created debts that could affect my financial future.

And someone had persuaded my wife to help cover those debts without telling me.

It wasn’t confusion anymore.

It was deliberate.

I looked at the three applications.

Then at the man sitting opposite me.

“Jordan, we’re going to go through every one of these accounts.”

He crossed his arms.

“You’re making a big deal out of nothing.”

I placed my hand on the folder.

“I don’t think you understand how serious this is.”

He looked toward Pam.

For years, that had apparently been enough.

He only needed to look worried.

She would find a way to help him.

But this time Pam didn’t speak for him.

She kept looking at the papers.

I watched her face.

She was beginning to see the same thing I had seen that afternoon.

And I knew that whatever happened next, our family would not be able to return to the way things had been.

Source: <a
