7 – When My Stepson Realized an Apology Would Not Erase the Fraud, He Begged Me to Keep His Actions From the Authorities

The list of records grew longer as we talked.

Jordan sat with his hands clasped together.

He no longer looked as confident as he had when he arrived.

His clean shirt and careful apology hadn't changed the documents.

The applications were still there.

The transactions were still there.

And Pam's retirement money was still gone.

I wrote down the remaining information we needed.

Then I pushed the list toward him.

He read it slowly.

"All of this?"

"Yes."

He frowned.

"That could take a while."

"I understand."

He looked at his mother.

Pam didn't say anything.

I told him the records mattered because we needed to separate what he remembered from what could actually be verified.

He had already admitted that some of the money his mother paid never reached the credit-card accounts.

He had admitted trying to obtain a personal loan using my information.

And he had acknowledged that he might have submitted another credit application.

There were too many gaps for us to accept a vague account of what happened.

He had been handling the money.

He had been opening the accounts.

He was the one person in the room who should have understood the activity better than anyone else.

Yet every time I asked for a complete answer, he seemed uncertain.

I didn't know how much of that uncertainty was genuine.

Maybe the gambling had become so chaotic that he no longer remembered every transaction.

Maybe he was embarrassed.

Maybe he was still trying to conceal something.

I wasn't going to pretend I knew.

The records would help us find out.

Jordan shifted in his chair.

"Gary, I already told you I was wrong."

"I heard you."

"I said I'd pay it back."

"I heard that too."

He stared at me.

"Then what else do you want?"

I looked at the list.

"The truth, supported by the records."

He exhaled.

For a moment, he seemed ready to argue.

Then he asked whether we really needed to involve lawyers.

I didn't answer immediately.

Robert had been clear.

This wasn't an ordinary family debt.

It involved accounts opened without my consent.

It involved my Social Security number.

And it involved a pattern of transactions that could affect my credit and financial security.

I had already spoken with the card companies.

An investigation had begun.

I couldn't simply pretend none of that had happened because Jordan regretted getting caught.

I told him professionals were already helping me understand the situation.

His expression changed.

"What professionals?"

"People who know how to handle financial fraud."

He sat straighter.

"Are you talking about reporting me?"

Pam looked at me.

I could tell she was afraid of my answer.

I wasn't trying to frighten either of them.

But I wasn't willing to make a promise that might require me to lie.

I told Jordan I hadn't decided what every next step would be.

I would review the evidence.

I would listen to the people advising me.

And I would answer questions truthfully.

He shook his head.

"Gary, you can't do that to me."

I looked at him.

He was speaking as though the problem had begun when I discovered the accounts.

As though the real danger was my reaction.

Not the choices he'd made over three years.

I asked what he expected me to do.

He said we could handle it privately.

He said he would get work.

He said he would repay the money.

He promised not to use my information again.

I listened.

But none of those promises addressed the fact that fraudulent applications already existed.

None changed the records held by the lenders.

And none restored the money Pam had taken from her retirement.

Jordan leaned forward.

"Please. If this becomes official, it could destroy everything for me."

His voice was quieter now.

I could see genuine fear.

I didn't enjoy it.

I had never wanted to see Pam's son in trouble with the law.

I had never wanted a family dispute to become a financial investigation.

I had certainly never wanted to spend my retirement sorting through accounts opened without my permission.

But wanting to avoid something didn't mean I could ignore it.

I looked at him.

"You put my future at risk when you used my identity."

He stared down at the table.

I didn't raise my voice.

There was no need.

He knew what he'd done.

For years, he had been counting on the fact that his mother would protect him.

I think he expected me to do the same once he apologized.

He seemed unable to understand why I wouldn't agree.

I thought about my first storage lot.

Back then, I had very little room for mistakes.

If a tenant didn't pay, I still had bills.

If the gate broke, I still had to repair it.

If an agreement was signed incorrectly, I had to deal with the consequences.

I couldn't tell the bank that I was sorry and expect my obligations to disappear.

I couldn't tell a contractor I was having a hard month and expect him to work for nothing.

Responsibility wasn't something I demanded only from Jordan.

It was something I'd spent my life trying to practice.

And when I failed, I had to face it.

I wasn't perfect.

I had made financial mistakes.

I had taken risks that worried me.

I had made decisions that turned out badly.

But those were my decisions.

I couldn't put them under somebody else's name.

I couldn't ask another person to pay for them while telling a story that made me look innocent.

Pam looked at her son.

"Jordan, you need to give Gary what he's asking for."

He turned toward her.

"Mom, I'm trying."

"I know."

Her voice was tired.

"But you have to stop expecting us to make this disappear."

He stared at her.

That was the first time I had heard her speak to him that way.

Not angrily.

Not cruelly.

But without offering another escape.

I felt relieved.

Then I felt guilty for being relieved.

Pam had just learned how badly her son had deceived her.

She was grieving the loss of the person she thought she could trust.

And I was sitting there noticing the change in her behavior.

Looking back, I think I was searching for signs that our marriage still had a chance.

I wanted to know whether she could see what had happened.

Whether she could stop making excuses.

Whether we could face the problem together instead of letting Jordan stand between us.

Those questions mattered almost as much to me as the accounts.

Jordan looked back at the paper.

He asked when I needed the records.

I told him to begin gathering them and provide the information as soon as he could.

I didn't give him a deadline I couldn't enforce.

I didn't threaten him.

I wanted the documents.

That was all.

We spent more time discussing where he might find the statements and application details.

He said some information was available online.

Some would have to come from the lenders.

I told him to document what he found.

He nodded.

Pam asked whether he understood what he needed to do.

He said yes.

Eventually, the conversation slowed.

There wasn't much more we could establish without additional records.

Jordan gathered his things.

He looked tired.

For a moment, I saw the man Pam had been trying to protect.

Not an innocent boy.

Not a helpless victim.

Just a forty-one-year-old man who had made serious mistakes and was frightened of the consequences.

I wished there were an easier way through it.

But wishing didn't change the truth.

He stood.

Pam stood too.

I remained beside the table.

Jordan looked toward me.

"I really am sorry, Gary."

I nodded.

I wasn't ready to say I forgave him.

I wasn't even certain I understood the full extent of what he'd done.

I told him I expected the records.

He said he would get them.

Then he left.

Pam walked to the front of the house and watched him go.

I stayed near the table.

The folder was still open.

Jordan's handwriting remained on the sheet he'd filled out.

I looked at the apartment address.

The telephone numbers.

The name of the loan application.

I thought about the sale documents in my briefcase.

For the entire conversation, I hadn't mentioned them.

Jordan had been asking for forgiveness without knowing I had recently sold my business.

He had been worrying about the fraud without knowing the amount of money now connected to my financial future.

I was glad I hadn't told him.

Because I still didn't know whether his apology came from understanding what he'd done or from fear of what might happen next.

I wasn't going to add nineteen million dollars to that uncertainty.

I closed the folder.

Then Pam came back into the room.

Her eyes were red.

She looked at the briefcase beside my chair.

And she asked a question I wasn't prepared to answer yet.

Source: psndaily.xyz

<a
