12 – I Had More Money Than I Ever Expected, Yet the Only Thing I Wanted Was an Honest Answer From My Family

The next morning, I looked at the briefcase before getting out of bed.

It was sitting beside the guest-room chair.

Inside were two sets of documents.

One concerned the identity theft.

The other concerned the sale of my storage lots.

I had begun keeping them separate.

Not only because Robert advised it.

Because the two matters represented very different things.

The fraud records showed what someone else had done using my identity.

The sale papers showed what I had accomplished through nearly thirty years of work.

I didn't want one to erase the other.

And I didn't want the money to become an excuse for the fraud.

I sat on the edge of the bed.

For a moment, I thought about how different the past week could have been.

I could have been planning a retirement trip.

I could have been looking at places Pam and I wanted to visit.

I could have been deciding how often to go fishing.

Instead, I was wondering whether the next document I opened would contain another account I hadn't authorized.

I rubbed my eyes.

There was no benefit in feeling sorry for myself.

The situation needed attention.

I had dealt with difficult problems before.

This one happened to involve people I loved.

That made it painful.

But it didn't make careful thinking any less important.

I got dressed.

Then I checked the folder.

Jordan's handwritten list was where I'd left it.

So were the credit-card applications.

The printed statements were organized.

I had the reference number from the fraud department.

I looked at the records for several minutes.

Three known accounts.

A possible additional application.

A rejected personal-loan request.

Uncertain spending.

And payments from Pam that still needed to be fully accounted for.

I didn't know whether the investigation would uncover more.

I wasn't going to assume it would.

But I wasn't going to assume it wouldn't either.

I had learned that lesson in business.

An unanswered question was a reason to check the records.

Not a reason to invent an explanation.

I put everything away.

Then I took out the closing statement.

The number still startled me.

Nineteen million eight hundred thousand dollars.

I thought about how many years had gone into earning it.

I remembered buying the first storage property.

I remembered the roof that leaked.

The gate that failed when the weather turned cold.

The tenant who stored a boat for eleven years.

The customer who disappeared for months before returning with cash and an apology.

Those were ordinary memories.

Nobody would pay millions of dollars to hear them.

But they mattered to me.

Each represented part of the business I had built.

I had never thought of the storage lots as glamorous.

They were useful.

People needed space.

They needed somewhere secure to keep belongings during difficult changes.

And I provided it.

The work wasn't complicated in theory.

But doing it consistently for decades required patience.

You had to keep records.

Maintain the property.

Answer complaints.

Collect payments.

Make repairs.

And accept that some days would be difficult no matter how carefully you planned.

I had done those things.

Eventually, the business became valuable.

When the buyer approached, I examined the opportunity carefully.

I worked through the negotiations.

I signed the sale documents.

And the transaction closed.

I had expected to feel enormous relief.

Instead, I found myself wondering who I could trust with the news.

That was a strange position to be in.

I had more money than I ever expected to need.

Yet I was afraid of what might happen when my family learned about it.

I didn't like admitting that.

I didn't want money to make me suspicious of everyone.

I didn't want to become a man who assumed every kindness came with an ulterior motive.

But the timing of Jordan's actions made caution necessary.

He had already shown that he was willing to use my financial identity without permission.

And he had already blamed me for not helping him more.

If he learned about the sale before we finished dealing with the fraud, I worried the conversations would become even more difficult.

I could imagine him insisting that the amount he owed was insignificant compared with my wealth.

I could imagine him arguing that I had no reason to pursue the matter.

I could imagine him telling Pam that I was being cruel.

I didn't know whether he would say those things.

But the possibility was enough to make me careful.

I wasn't going to give him another opportunity to turn the issue into something it wasn't.

This wasn't about whether I could afford to help him.

It was about what he'd done.

I had helped him before.

I'd helped with car repairs.

I'd helped him move.

I'd bought gifts for his children.

I had done those things willingly.

They were gifts.

Not obligations.

And certainly not permission to obtain credit in my name.

I looked at the closing statement again.

Then I put it away.

The money would still be there when I was ready to discuss it.

There was no need to announce it that morning.

I went into the kitchen.

Pam was there.

She looked tired.

I suspected she'd slept badly.

She asked whether I wanted coffee.

I said yes.

She poured a cup.

Then we sat at the table.

The room was quiet.

I looked at the spot where Jordan had written down the account information.

I wondered whether Pam could see it too.

She stared into her cup.

Then she asked whether I thought the credit-card companies would be able to sort out the accounts.

I told her I hoped so.

But it would take time.

Robert had warned me not to expect a quick resolution.

The companies needed to investigate.

There might be additional records to review.

And the money she'd paid could be particularly complicated.

She nodded.

"I keep thinking I should have checked the statements."

I looked at her.

"Yes. You should have."

She winced.

I didn't say it to hurt her.

But I wasn't going to tell her she'd done nothing wrong.

She had a responsibility to understand where her retirement savings were going.

Especially when somebody claimed the money was being used to protect our future.

She looked down.

"I thought Jordan was handling it."

"I know."

She wiped beneath one eye.

"I should have asked you."

I nodded.

That was the truth.

And I wanted her to be able to say it without expecting me to immediately make her feel better.

Some mistakes needed to be acknowledged before they could be repaired.

Pam looked toward the window.

"I don't know how I'm going to trust him again."

I thought about Jordan.

His apologies.

His promises.

The paperwork.

I didn't have an answer.

Trust couldn't be ordered.

It couldn't be demanded.

And it couldn't be restored simply because someone wanted the uncomfortable part to end.

I told her she didn't have to decide everything immediately.

Neither did I.

We could wait for the records.

We could listen to the professionals.

We could see whether Jordan followed through.

She nodded.

I hoped she understood that waiting wasn't the same as forgiving.

I could give Jordan an opportunity to demonstrate responsibility.

That didn't mean I had to accept another promise without evidence.

And I could give Pam time to rebuild trust.

That didn't mean I had to pretend the years of silence hadn't hurt.

I drank some coffee.

It had cooled.

I looked at the cup.

An ordinary object.

An ordinary morning.

A week earlier, I would have been thinking about the office.

Maybe a maintenance problem.

Maybe a payment.

Maybe the anniversary dinner.

Now I was thinking about whether my wife and I would still be sharing coffee a year from then.

I hated that thought.

But I couldn't ignore it.

Pam looked at me.

"Do you still love me?"

I held her gaze.

"Yes."

She began crying.

I waited.

Then she asked whether that meant we would be all right.

I looked down.

"I don't know."

She nodded slowly.

I could see how badly she wanted certainty.

I wanted it too.

But I had spent almost thirty years learning that promises were only useful when they were supported by action.

I wasn't going to promise a future I hadn't yet decided I could live with.

Pam wiped her face.

"I want to make this right."

I looked at her.

"Then we have to be honest with each other."

She nodded.

"Even when the truth is uncomfortable."

"I understand."

I wanted to believe her.

I did believe she meant it in that moment.

But I'd also believed we were honest with each other before.

That was the difficult part.

I had to learn how to trust what I was hearing again.

And she had to understand why that would take time.

After breakfast, I returned to the guest room.

I checked the briefcase.

Then I sat down.

I thought about my father.

The twenty dollars.

The kitchen table.

The question he'd asked.

Why hadn't I asked permission if I intended to return the money?

I had carried that lesson through my adult life.

I'd tried to be straightforward in business.

I'd tried to keep my promises.

I'd tried not to take advantage of people who trusted me.

I wasn't perfect.

But I knew the kind of man I wanted to be.

And I wasn't going to abandon that simply because I now had millions in the bank.

I thought about the sale.

The letter I'd planned for Pam.

The anniversary dinner.

The fishing mornings.

The travel.

The possibility of helping her grandchildren with education.

Those dreams still existed.

But I understood now that money couldn't guarantee any of them would bring happiness.

If Pam and I couldn't restore trust, a trip wouldn't fix it.

If Jordan continued lying, paying his debts wouldn't change him.

If I allowed fear to control every decision, the sale wouldn't give me freedom.

I had to protect what mattered.

Not only the money.

My judgment.

My peace.

My ability to live with the choices I made.

I looked toward the door.

Pam was somewhere in the house.

I could hear her moving about.

I still loved her.

I still wanted to believe we could find our way through the damage.

But I couldn't do it alone.

She would have to make different choices.

Jordan would have to face what he'd done.

And I would have to decide when I was ready to share the news that had been sitting inside my briefcase.

I reached for the closing statement.

For a moment, I pictured placing it in front of Pam.

I imagined her reading the sale price.

I imagined explaining what it meant.

Then I thought about Robert's advice.

The investigation wasn't complete.

The accounts still needed protection.

And the most important conversations were still unresolved.

I returned the statement to the folder.

There would be a time to tell her.

I meant to keep that promise.

But I wouldn't use the money to cover a problem that needed to be faced honestly.

I closed the briefcase.

Then I sat quietly for a while.

For the first time since the confrontation, I wasn't thinking about what Jordan might say next.

I was thinking about what I needed to do.

Protect my identity.

Keep accurate records.

Listen to sound advice.

Make no promises I couldn't honor.

And decide what kind of relationships I could have with the people I loved.

Those decisions wouldn't be easy.

But at least they would be mine.

That was something Jordan had tried to take away.

And something I wasn't prepared to surrender.

Source: psndaily.xyz

<a
