3 – My Future Daughter-in-Law Wanted Money for Her Wedding, While Her Father’s Division Was Hiding Payments No One Could Explain

Sunday morning, Vanessa sent me a cheerful message.

I had just finished breakfast.

My gardening gloves were drying beside the back door.

I read her words while standing at the kitchen counter.

She hoped I hadn't taken her father's remarks seriously.

He had a strange sense of humor, she explained.

Successful businessmen could be that way.

I stared at the screen.

I had worked with successful businessmen for decades.

Some were generous.

Some were difficult.

Some were completely ordinary.

Being successful did not require making fun of people.

And it certainly didn't excuse it.

Before I could answer, another message arrived.

This one concerned the wedding.

Vanessa asked me not to discuss financial matters or business topics in front of her parents.

She said those conversations created discomfort.

I read that twice.

On Friday, her father had laughed about putting me to work cleaning toilets.

On Sunday, his daughter was asking me not to embarrass them by discussing money.

I sat down.

For a minute, I considered responding with the truth.

I could have written that I owned the company her father managed.

I could have explained that my business decisions affected his salary.

I could have told her that I was already reviewing financial records from his division.

Instead, I wrote a brief, polite reply.

I wished her a pleasant Sunday.

A little heart appeared on my screen.

Vanessa seemed satisfied.

I put the phone down.

There was something almost absurd about it.

She believed she was being gracious to a poor woman.

And I was letting her believe it.

Part of me disliked that.

Part of me wondered whether I was being unfair.

But I had never claimed to be poor.

I had simply lived modestly.

The assumptions belonged to her.

I went outside and checked my roses.

One of the bushes had new growth.

I trimmed a damaged stem.

Then my phone rang again.

Daniel.

"Mom, do you have a minute?"

"Always."

He sounded uncomfortable.

I could tell before he asked the question.

"Vanessa and I have been talking about the wedding."

"I assumed you would be."

He didn't laugh.

"Her parents booked a hotel for the reception."

"All right."

"Apparently, the deposit is more than they expected."

I waited.

He cleared his throat.

"They want me to contribute twenty-five thousand dollars."

I looked at the rose clippings in my hand.

"Can you afford that?"

"Technically."

"That wasn't quite what I asked."

He sighed.

"I have money saved."

"For your studio?"

"Yes."

His architecture business was still growing.

He had been planning improvements.

He wanted to expand his work.

Twenty-five thousand dollars mattered to him.

"Would paying that deposit delay your plans?"

"Probably."

I carried the clippings toward the garden bin.

"Do you want that hotel?"

He paused.

"It's beautiful."

"That wasn't my question."

There was a small silence.

Then he admitted that he thought the reception was too expensive.

I closed the garden bin.

"Then why are you agreeing to it?"

"I want Vanessa to be happy."

"I understand."

"She's been planning this for months."

"Daniel, you can care about her happiness without agreeing to every expense."

He didn't answer immediately.

I continued.

"If you're planning a life together, you need to be able to say when something is beyond your comfort level."

"I know."

"Do her parents know what that money means to your business?"

"I'm not sure."

"Then tell them."

He sounded tired.

"Her father keeps saying these things are investments in relationships."

I leaned against the garden gate.

"Your marriage isn't a business conference."

He laughed.

Only briefly.

But I was relieved to hear it.

We discussed the wedding for a few more minutes.

I did not offer to pay the deposit.

I could have written a check without noticing the amount.

But that wasn't the issue.

Daniel had said he didn't want the expensive reception.

He needed to be able to say so.

When we hung up, I thought again about Vanessa's message.

Don't discuss money.

Unless they wanted some.

I didn't enjoy that thought.

I didn't want to become suspicious of everything my future daughter-in-law said.

I wanted to like her.

I wanted Daniel to be happy.

I wanted the wedding to happen for the right reasons.

That afternoon, I returned to my home office.

Rebecca had forwarded additional information.

The independent review was beginning to connect some of the records.

I worked through the papers carefully.

There were several consulting firms.

Different names.

Different invoices.

But some of the company details overlapped.

I checked the registration dates.

Then I compared the payment approvals.

The same division appeared repeatedly.

Richard's division.

I called Rebecca.

"Has anyone established where these businesses are connected?"

"We have some preliminary findings."

"Tell me."

She explained that several questionable payments might have passed through businesses linked to people close to Richard's management team.

The investigators were still verifying the ownership records.

Nothing was final.

I appreciated that.

I did not want accusations presented as conclusions.

"How much are we examining?"

She gave me the current estimate.

Approximately two million eight hundred thousand dollars.

I wrote the figure on a notepad.

Then I looked at it.

That was an enormous amount of money.

More importantly, there were no clear supporting records for significant portions of it.

"Do we know whether Richard personally benefited?"

"Not conclusively."

"What do we know?"

"One company receiving payments appears connected through its address to a property business involving Richard's brother-in-law."

I lowered my pen.

"His brother-in-law?"

"Yes."

"Are the records reliable?"

"The connection is being checked. We need more documents."

"Then keep checking."

"I will."

I turned another page.

Rebecca continued.

"There's another problem."

"What is it?"

"Richard's division was preparing a major vendor contract."

"With whom?"

"One of the firms under review."

I looked toward the window.

"How large?"

"Five years. Approximately fourteen million dollars."

I sat upright.

"Has it been signed?"

"No."

"Stop it."

"Already done."

I let out a breath.

Fourteen million dollars.

A five-year commitment.

And the proposed vendor already had unresolved questions surrounding its earlier payments.

I was glad Rebecca had caught it.

"Does Richard know you've stopped the contract?"

"Not yet."

"Keep the investigation confidential within the proper team."

"Understood."

I rubbed my forehead.

For two days, I had been trying to separate my personal experience with Richard from my responsibilities as chairwoman.

Now the numbers were speaking for themselves.

I had no way to know everything that had happened.

But there was more than enough reason for a serious investigation.

Rebecca hesitated.

"Margaret, Monday's executive meeting is still scheduled."

"What time?"

"Nine."

"Richard will be there?"

"He's presenting the quarterly results."

I looked at the clock.

Then at the calendar beside my computer.

Monday.

The same day he had jokingly invited me to clean his company's toilets.

I almost smiled.

"What does he plan to present?"

"Record performance and expansion opportunities."

I opened his report again.

Those words meant something different now.

"Has the board been briefed about the preliminary concerns?"

"The relevant members have been informed, and temporary safeguards are being arranged."

"Good."

"Would you like me to announce your attendance?"

"No."

Rebecca was quiet.

"Are you certain?"

"Yes."

"I suspect he'll be surprised."

"Then he'll have to manage his surprise."

She gave a small sigh.

"Margaret, this could become uncomfortable."

I looked at James's photograph.

He was standing outside our first factory.

His shirt sleeves were rolled up.

I could remember the day the photograph was taken.

We had been frightened about money.

Frightened about the future.

But we had been proud of the business we were building.

I spoke more quietly.

"Rebecca, I didn't spend thirty-two years building this company so someone could treat our employees as though they didn't matter."

"I know."

"I want a fair process."

"Of course."

"No assumptions. No personal retaliation."

"Agreed."

"But we're not going to ignore records that don't make sense."

"We won't."

We reviewed Monday's arrangements.

The independent investigators would continue their work.

Legal counsel would advise on the company's obligations.

Relevant records would be protected.

And Richard would be asked to answer questions about his division.

I thanked Rebecca.

Then I closed my computer.

The room felt unusually quiet.

I looked at the photograph again.

James had died years earlier.

Daniel had been twenty-four when we lost him.

I still found myself wondering what my husband would think during difficult business decisions.

I knew he wouldn't enjoy the confrontation waiting for us.

Neither did I.

He had always told me that removing a person from a position of responsibility should never be done lightly.

People had families.

Mortgages.

Reputations.

But those same considerations applied to employees who couldn't simply walk away from bad conditions.

I took one last look at the figures.

Seven hundred eighty thousand.

More than one million two hundred thousand.

Approximately two million eight hundred thousand under review.

A proposed fourteen-million-dollar contract.

Thirty-seven employee complaints.

Emily Carter's closed report.

I wrote the numbers and names on one page.

Then placed that page inside my folder.

Those were the matters I intended to discuss.

Not my handbag.

Not my old Toyota.

Not what had happened at a dinner table.

Richard's treatment of me had shown me something about his character.

The records were raising questions about his leadership.

Those were two different things.

I knew the difference.

By Sunday evening, my decision was made.

I would attend the executive meeting.

I would ask the questions.

And I would insist on proper answers.

I put James's photograph back in its usual place.

Then I prepared my clothes for Monday.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Walked Into My Own Boardroom Wearing the Same Plain Clothes Richard Had Mocked, and His Perfect Financial Presentation Fell Apart

Sunday morning, Vanessa sent me a cheerful message.
