6 – Vanessa Called While My Son Was Sitting Across From Me, and Her Own Words Made Him Question Everything About Their Engagement

Daniel stared at his phone as though it might tell him what to do.

Vanessa's name remained on the screen.

I could hear the faint vibration against the kitchen table.

He looked at me.

"Should I answer?"

"That's your choice."

He swallowed.

Then accepted the call.

"Hello?"

Vanessa started speaking before he finished the word.

Her voice was sharp enough that I could hear it from my chair.

"Where have you been?"

Daniel glanced toward the window.

"I'm at Mom's."

There was a pause.

"You're with her?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I needed to speak to her."

I watched my son's face.

He looked tired.

But he was sitting straighter than when he'd arrived.

Vanessa continued talking.

I couldn't make out every word.

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Vanessa, slow down."

She didn't.

He looked at me.

Then touched the speaker button.

Her voice filled the little kitchen.

"Your mother has made my father look like a fool in front of the entire company."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Vanessa, your father humiliated my mother first."

"Oh, please."

I looked down at my coffee.

"He made one stupid joke."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"That wasn't a joke to me."

"You're still upset about the cleaning thing?"

"Yes."

She sighed loudly.

"Daniel, you're making this much bigger than it was."

He looked at me for a moment.

Then spoke carefully.

"Your father offered my mother a toilet-cleaning job in front of his guests."

"He wasn't serious."

"Everyone laughed at her."

"Because it was funny."

I watched Daniel's expression change.

There it was again.

The same easy dismissal I had heard at dinner.

I had hoped Vanessa might have thought differently after a few days.

She hadn't.

Daniel took a breath.

"Would you have laughed if somebody did that to your mother?"

Silence.

Then she said, "That's different."

"Why?"

"Because my mother doesn't need a job cleaning toilets."

I looked toward the sink.

The words were plain.

Almost casual.

And that made them worse.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Neither does mine."

Vanessa laughed once.

"Apparently not."

He rubbed his forehead.

"What does that mean?"

"My father told me everything."

"Everything about what?"

"About your mother's little performance at the company."

I stayed silent.

Daniel looked toward the papers on the table.

"She's the owner, Vanessa."

"That's what she claims."

"It's true."

Another pause.

"Well, if it's true, then she's been lying to us."

I felt the words land.

I had expected that accusation.

I hadn't expected how much it would hurt hearing it through my son's phone.

Daniel looked at me.

"She didn't lie about being poor."

Vanessa's voice rose.

"She certainly let everyone believe it."

"She never said she needed money."

"She lives in that tiny house."

"So?"

"And she drives an old Toyota."

Daniel looked toward the front window.

My car was parked outside.

The same car he had ridden in countless times.

"What's wrong with her car?"

Vanessa made an impatient sound.

"You're missing the point."

"Then explain it."

"People don't hide that kind of wealth unless they're trying to catch someone doing something wrong."

I folded my hands.

She was closer to the truth than she knew.

But not in the way she imagined.

I hadn't gone to Richard's dinner to test anyone.

I had gone because my son was getting married.

I wanted to meet the family.

Nothing more.

Daniel spoke quietly.

"Mom didn't have to tell your parents how much money she has."

Vanessa laughed again.

"Of course she did. We're about to become family."

"That doesn't make her finances your business."

I looked at Daniel.

He had said it without raising his voice.

For some reason, that mattered more than anything else he'd said that afternoon.

Vanessa went quiet.

Then her tone changed.

"Listen, Daniel. Dad is furious, but he's trying to think practically."

Daniel frowned.

"Practically?"

"Yes. We need to get married soon."

I looked up.

Daniel looked equally confused.

"What?"

"The wedding. We should move it forward."

"Why?"

"Because this situation is becoming ridiculous."

I watched him place his free hand on the table.

"How would getting married fix anything?"

"Once we're married, our families will be connected. Dad can help you. Everyone can move past this."

Daniel stared at the phone.

"Help me with what?"

"Your architecture studio."

He looked at the preliminary contract proposal.

I knew what he was thinking.

Four million five hundred thousand dollars.

A project he had never applied for.

A business opportunity supposedly connected to his future marriage.

Vanessa continued.

"My father knows people. He can introduce you to executives and investors."

Daniel didn't answer.

"He could make things much easier for you."

I watched his face.

He had spent years refusing shortcuts.

Now his fiancée was describing those shortcuts as one of the benefits of marrying her.

"Vanessa, did you know your father was preparing a contract for my firm?"

There was silence.

"What contract?"

"A company proposal."

"I don't know what you mean."

Daniel picked up the document.

"Four point five million dollars."

Another silence.

I could hear faint movement on her end of the call.

"Where did you get that number?"

"That's not what I asked."

"Daniel, you're getting confused."

"Did you know about the proposal?"

She exhaled.

"You're turning this into some kind of interrogation."

"I asked a simple question."

"My father was trying to help us."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"So you did know?"

"I never said that."

"Then tell me what you knew."

She became angry.

"Why are you speaking to me like this?"

He didn't answer.

"Your mother has embarrassed my father, and now you're treating me as though I've done something terrible."

Daniel glanced at me.

I shook my head slightly.

Not to tell him what to say.

Only to remind him he didn't need to argue.

He took a breath.

"Vanessa, I need a straight answer."

She didn't give him one.

Instead, she began talking about Richard.

His years of service.

His business achievements.

His importance.

She said he had worked too hard to deserve being questioned by someone who hadn't even visited headquarters for months.

I heard Daniel shift in his chair.

"That someone is the person who founded the company."

"Apparently."

"Vanessa."

"What?"

"My mother built Collins Industrial Holdings with my father."

There was another long pause.

"Your mother?"

"Yes."

"That can't be right."

"It is."

"But your father died years ago."

"Yes. And she continued running what they built."

I looked at James's photograph.

Daniel had left it beside his coffee.

For the first time in years, I heard my son describe his father's business with the pride I had hoped he'd feel.

It was painful.

And beautiful.

Vanessa sounded unsettled.

"Well, why didn't she tell us?"

Daniel answered slowly.

"Because she didn't think she needed to."

"She was testing us."

"No."

"How can you know?"

"Because I know my mother."

I felt my throat tighten.

He continued.

"She didn't ask your parents for money. She didn't ask them for anything."

Vanessa interrupted.

"Except respect, apparently."

Daniel sat back.

"Yes."

The kitchen became very quiet.

"She expected to be treated respectfully."

Vanessa made another impatient sound.

"Daniel, you're supposed to support me."

"I'm trying to understand what's happening."

"You should be standing beside your future wife."

He looked at the ring on his finger.

A simple band he wore while planning the wedding.

"I thought marriage meant we could tell each other the truth."

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, "You're choosing your mother over me."

Daniel's eyes filled.

I wanted to reach for him.

I stayed where I was.

This wasn't my conversation.

"You're asking me to ignore the way your father treated her."

"He apologized."

"Only after finding out who she was."

Silence.

Daniel looked down at the papers.

"And you're asking me to trust a business arrangement nobody told me about."

"You're twisting everything."

"Then help me understand."

Vanessa's voice hardened.

"If you keep listening to her, you're going to ruin our future."

I watched my son absorb those words.

He had wanted that future.

I knew he had.

I remembered the day he told me he wanted to marry Vanessa.

He'd been so happy he could barely sit still.

He had shown me the ring.

Asked whether I thought she'd like it.

I had told him the most important thing was that she understood how much he loved her.

Now he sat at my kitchen table looking as though he didn't recognize the woman on the other end of the phone.

"Vanessa, I need some time."

"What?"

"Time to think."

"You can't do this right now."

"I need to."

"Daniel, my father is already dealing with enough."

He closed his eyes.

"Then he should focus on answering the investigators."

There was a sharp silence.

"You sound just like your mother."

Daniel looked at me.

Then answered quietly.

"I don't think that's an insult."

Vanessa said something I couldn't fully hear.

He didn't respond.

A moment later, he ended the call.

He placed the phone face down.

Then covered his face with both hands.

I sat still.

The clock ticked above the doorway.

Outside, a bird landed near the garden fence.

Daniel's shoulders moved.

He was crying.

Quietly.

I stood and walked around the table.

Then sat beside him.

I put one arm around his shoulders.

He leaned toward me.

For a while, I said nothing.

I had learned from losing James that there were moments when words only got in the way.

Eventually, Daniel lowered his hands.

"I thought she loved me."

I looked at him.

"She may have feelings for you."

He shook his head.

"Then why does everything come back to money?"

I didn't have an answer that could comfort him.

He wiped his eyes.

"I kept thinking things would change after the wedding."

I felt a small ache in my chest.

"Daniel, marriage usually doesn't solve problems people refuse to discuss."

He nodded.

"I know."

I handed him a clean napkin.

He took it.

Then looked at the photograph of James.

"Dad would've hated that dinner."

I gave a sad smile.

"He would have."

"He never cared what people drove."

"No."

"He would've told Richard exactly what he thought."

I laughed softly.

"Probably."

Daniel picked up the frame.

His thumb moved along its edge.

"Mom, I don't know what to do."

I took his hand.

"You don't need to decide your whole future this afternoon."

He nodded.

"But you do need to be honest with yourself."

He looked at me.

"And with Vanessa."

He wiped his face again.

"I don't think I can marry her until I understand what she's been hiding."

I squeezed his hand.

That was his decision.

Not mine.

And although I hated seeing him hurt, I was relieved he had made it for himself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Richard Whitmore Called Demanding His Job Back, but the Independent Audit
