They left before noon.
Claire drove while Rachel sat beside her, holding Robert's archive in a canvas bag between her feet. Neither woman said much during the first hour. The messages had changed the urgency of everything.
Daniel might still be alive.
That possibility was both terrifying and hopeful.
Claire had spent months grieving a man she believed had chosen another life. Now she had to confront the possibility that he had been fighting to return to her all along.
They stopped at a roadside café outside the city.
Rachel spread the documents across the table.
“Look at this.”
She pointed to an old hospital record.
The date was decades earlier.
The names had been partially blacked out, but the hospital was clearly identified.
Claire recognized the name.
It was the hospital where she had been born.
Rachel pulled out another document.
“My birth certificate.”
Claire stared.
The hospital listed on Rachel's original birth record was the same.
“That can't be coincidence.”
“No.”
Rachel placed a third document beside them.
Thomas Pierce's name appeared in the margin.
Claire felt a chill.
“What happened at this hospital?”
Rachel shook her head. “That's what Michael knows.”
They searched for the Boston address from the archive.
It belonged to an old brick building in a neighborhood that had changed considerably since Robert's photograph had been taken. The business listed at the address no longer existed.
But the building remained.
They arrived just after three in the afternoon.
A woman working in the neighboring office recognized Michael's name.
“He rented a room here years ago,” she said.
“Is he still around?”
The woman hesitated.
“He comes sometimes.”
“When?”
“Usually when nobody expects him.”
Claire exchanged a look with Rachel.
“What does he look like now?”
The woman described a gray-haired man with a slight limp.
Rachel immediately pulled out the photograph.
“Is this him?”
The woman stared at it.
“Yes.”
Then she lowered her voice.
“But you shouldn't look for him.”
“Why?”
“Because the last people who did never came back.”
Claire's stomach tightened.
“Who were they?”
The woman shook her head.
“I've said enough.”
They returned to the car.
For the first time, Claire considered abandoning the search.
Then she remembered Robert's letter.
I believed the threat was real.*
Someone had controlled her family for decades.
Someone had manipulated her parents.
Someone had separated Rachel from Thomas.
Someone had driven Daniel into hiding.
And now that person knew Claire was searching.
They waited outside the building until evening.
At 7:42 p.m., a gray-haired man stepped from a black sedan.
Rachel recognized him first.
“Michael.”
They followed him into the building.
He reached the third floor before realizing he was no longer alone.
He turned.
His face changed when he saw Rachel.
Then Claire.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Finally, Michael whispered, “Robert's daughter.”
Claire stepped forward.
“You knew my father.”
“I knew him better than you think.”
“You knew Thomas too.”
Michael's expression hardened.
“Who told you?”
“Robert.”
That name broke something inside him.
Michael leaned against the wall.
“Then it's already too late.”
“Too late for what?”
“For hiding.”
He unlocked a small office.
Inside were boxes stacked from floor to ceiling.
Old photographs.
Files.
Medical records.
Bank documents.
Newspaper clippings.
Claire saw Daniel's name on one folder.
She rushed toward it.
Michael stopped her.
“You don't understand.”
“My husband disappeared.”
“I know.”
“You know where he is?”
Michael looked at Rachel.
Then back at Claire.
“Daniel found the truth before he was supposed to.”
“What truth?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“The truth about the children.”
Rachel's face went pale.
“What children?”
Michael pointed toward the archive.
“Your births were not the beginning of the story. They were the result of it.”
Claire stared at him.
He explained that decades earlier, a private medical network had been involved in illegal adoption arrangements and fraudulent birth records. Wealthy families had paid to manipulate records, separate biological parents, and erase inconvenient connections.
Thomas had discovered the scheme.
Robert had discovered it too.
But instead of exposing it immediately, Robert had been threatened.
Michael had helped them collect evidence.
Then everything went wrong.
“There was one night,” Michael said. “A night when two babies were born.”
Claire felt her breath catch.
Rachel whispered, “Us?”
Michael nodded.
“You and Rachel.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“Why were our records changed?”
“Because someone wanted to make sure neither of you could ever find the other.”
“Who?”
Michael looked toward the door.
“Richard.”
Claire frowned.
“Who is Richard?”
Michael didn't answer.
Instead, he opened another folder.
Inside was a photograph of a younger man.
Claire recognized him from another family photograph.
Richard had been one of Robert's closest associates.
“He was involved from the beginning,” Michael said.
Rachel stared at the photograph.
“And Daniel?”
“Daniel discovered Richard had never stopped.”
Claire's hands began trembling.
“What did Richard do?”
Michael lowered his voice.
“He used your marriage.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“He arranged for Daniel to discover information that would make you believe he had betrayed you. He needed you separated from him.”
Rachel stepped forward.
“Why?”
“Because Daniel had evidence.”
“What evidence?”
Michael looked at Claire.
“Proof that Robert's death was not natural.”
Silence filled the room.
Claire remembered the funeral.
The flowers.
The rain.
Her mother's tears.
All the things she had never questioned.
“You're saying my father was murdered?”
Michael nodded.
“And Daniel found out.”
Claire felt something inside her break open.
“Where is Daniel?”
Michael hesitated.
Before he could answer, the building's lights went out.
Rachel grabbed Claire's hand.
A door slammed downstairs.
Michael whispered one word.
“Run.”
They moved through a back corridor.
A shadow crossed the stairwell.
Someone was coming.
Michael pushed open a hidden door behind a bookcase.
“Go.”
Claire refused.
“Not without you.”
“You don't have time.”
“Where is Daniel?”
Michael finally answered.
“West of Boston. An old Pierce property.”
Rachel looked at him.
“Thomas's property?”
Michael nodded.
Then another sound echoed through the building.
A gunshot.
Michael shoved the women through the hidden passage.
“Don't come back.”
The door slammed behind them.
Claire and Rachel ran into the darkness.
When they reached the street, Claire looked back.
The building was silent.
No lights.
No movement.
Rachel grabbed her arm.
“We have to go.”
Claire nodded.
But before they reached the car, her phone vibrated.
One new message.
*You should have listened to Michael.**
Then another.
*Daniel has already paid for your curiosity.**
