PART 10 – Marcus Finally Named the People Behind the Money, but His Next Admission Made Adrian’s Betrayal Look Like Only One Piece of a Larger Scheme

Marcus refused to speak for several minutes after saying that.

He sat with both hands clasped between his knees, staring at the carpet.

I waited.

Finally, he said, “Thomas thought the development was being used to move money between companies.”

“Whose companies?”

“Different people.”

“That's vague.”

“I know.”

My attorney leaned forward.

“We need specifics.”

Marcus nodded.

“There was a private investment group.”

He gave us the name.

My attorney wrote it down.

The group had been legitimate on paper.

It invested in property developments, construction companies, and commercial real estate.

But several of its investors used intermediaries.

Money would enter one company, move through another, then emerge somewhere else.

The development was one of those intermediaries.

“Was Adrian involved knowingly?”

Marcus didn't hesitate.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“How?”

“He helped establish some of the accounts.”

“Why?”

“Because he needed money.”

“For the development?”

“At first.”

Marcus looked at me.

“Later, he needed it for himself.”

The accountant asked about the missing funds.

Marcus explained that money had disappeared in stages.

Some went to Adrian's business.

Some went to Thomas's companies.

Some went elsewhere.

But the largest portion had gone to an account controlled by another investor.

A man named Victor Hale.

I had never heard the name.

“Who is he?”

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Someone with a lot of influence.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It’s the safest answer I can give.”

My attorney looked at him.

“Marcus, you agreed to cooperate.”

“I am cooperating.”

“You're withholding information.”

Marcus rubbed his face.

“Because Victor isn't someone you accuse casually.”

I looked at him.

“I've already been through a fraudulent loan, a destroyed marriage, and years of financial deception.”

He met my eyes.

“I believe you.”

“Then tell us.”

He finally did.

Victor had financed the original development through several companies.

When the project began failing, he demanded the missing money be recovered.

Thomas refused to falsify additional documents.

Adrian agreed.

That was the difference between them.

Thomas wanted out.

Adrian wanted another chance.

Marcus said Adrian believed he could solve everything if he could secure enough money.

“What was his plan?”

“Your property.”

I closed my eyes.

Again.

Always the same answer.

My house had been the final lever.

Marcus continued.

“Thomas tried to stop him.”

“How?”

“He told Adrian that Maria could never be brought into it.”

I looked up.

“Thomas knew my name.”

“Yes.”

“Did he know me personally?”

“No.”

“Then why did he care?”

Marcus gave a faint smile.

“Because Thomas had a daughter.”

I waited.

“He knew what it would mean to discover that the person you trusted most had been using your life to cover his mistakes.”

The words stayed with me.

Thomas had never met me.

Yet he had understood the damage better than the man who had married me.

“What happened between Thomas and Adrian?”

“They fought.”

“Physically?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Thomas threatened to expose him.”

“And Adrian?”

“He threatened to expose Thomas too.”

I frowned.

“What could Thomas be exposed for?”

Marcus looked away.

“That is complicated.”

My attorney's tone hardened.

“Then explain it.”

Marcus sighed.

“Thomas had signed documents he shouldn't have signed.”

“What documents?”

“Documents that allowed money to move through the development.”

“So he was involved.”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

Thomas had not been innocent.

He had been trying to undo something he had helped create.

I asked, “Did he regret it?”

“Every day.”

Marcus looked at me.

“That was why he wanted Adrian to tell you. He believed the truth was the only way to stop the damage.”

I thought about the message.

You need to tell her.

It finally made sense.

Thomas wasn't simply warning me about money.

He was asking Adrian to admit what both men had done.

Then Marcus said something that changed the entire conversation.

“Thomas had proof.”

“What proof?”

“A ledger.”

I leaned forward.

“Where is it?”

Marcus looked at the floor.

“I don't know.”

“You don't know?”

“Thomas kept it.”

“Where?”

“He told me he had hidden it.”

“Did he tell you where?”

“No.”

“Then why mention it?”

“Because Adrian was looking for it.”

My attorney stopped writing.

“When?”

“Before Thomas died.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Adrian asked me.”

“About the ledger?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Because it could prove who received the missing money.”

The accountant immediately asked whether the ledger could still exist.

Marcus nodded.

“Thomas was careful.”

“Where would he hide it?”

“I don't know.”

But then he remembered something.

“He once mentioned your mother.”

My body went rigid.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That she was the only person outside the development who could be trusted.”

I couldn't breathe for a moment.

My mother had known Thomas?

Apparently not directly.

But she had once investigated the development before deciding not to invest.

Maybe she had noticed something.

Maybe she had asked questions.

Maybe Thomas had approached her.

I called my mother.

She answered immediately.

“Maria?”

“Did you ever speak with Thomas Vale?”

There was silence.

A long one.

“Why are you asking?”

“Because I need the truth.”

She sighed.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“What did he tell you?”

“That the development wasn't safe.”

“Did he give you anything?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“I didn't think it mattered anymore.”

“Mom.”

“I have a box.”

My heart began pounding.

“Where?”

“Here.”

“I’m coming.”

I drove to her house.

She met me at the door.

The box was old.

Dusty.

Wrapped in brown paper.

She placed it on the table.

“I kept it because Thomas asked me to.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you were married to Adrian.”

I stared at her.

“I could have protected myself.”

“I know.”

Her eyes filled.

“But I thought keeping you away from the mess was protection.”

I didn't argue.

Inside the box were copies of financial documents.

Letters.

A small flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

The note was from Thomas.

If anything happens to me, give this to Maria only when she is no longer legally tied to Adrian.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at my mother.

“You waited until my divorce was final.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas was afraid Adrian would use you to get it back.”

I sat down.

The flash drive contained files.

The first folder held copies of the development's original financial records.

The second contained transfers.

The third contained correspondence.

The fourth was labeled Maria.

I stared at it.

My attorney was on speakerphone.

“Open it.”

Inside were documents about my house.

Not merely appraisals.

Not merely ownership records.

There was a proposed financing structure.

My house had been valued.

A percentage of its value had been assigned to a potential loan.

The document had been prepared years before Adrian's fraudulent application.

My name appeared as the owner.

The intended borrower was Adrian's company.

The proposed lender was one of Victor Hale's companies.

I felt sick.

He had been planning this long before the affair.

Then we found the final document.

It was an email from Thomas to Victor.

You cannot use Maria's property without her knowledge.

Victor's reply was one sentence.

Then make Adrian obtain it.

I stared at the screen.

My attorney said quietly, “That's the smoking gun.”

But it wasn't.

Because beneath Victor's message was another email.

From Adrian.

I can handle Maria.

I closed my eyes.

That sentence hurt more than the financial figures.

Not because it was dramatic.

Because it reduced my trust to a problem he believed he could solve.

He had never thought of me as a person he needed to persuade honestly.

He had thought of me as an obstacle.

Marcus read the document.

“That is why Thomas was afraid.”

I looked at him.

“Of Victor?”

“Of what would happen if Victor realized Thomas had kept copies.”

The room became silent.

Then my attorney's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Victor Hale knows about the documents.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

“We don't know.”

He ended the call.

A second later, another call came in.

This time it was from an unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a man's voice said quietly:

“You should stop looking for things that were buried for a reason.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

My mother reached for my hand.

I wasn't afraid of losing the house anymore.

I was afraid that the house had only ever been the visible part of a much larger secret.
