PART 14 – The Truth They Could No Longer Bury

The alarm continued for several seconds before suddenly stopping.

Silence returned.

Clara stood beside the altar, gripping the ledger.

The men outside remained motionless.

Graham did not look frightened.

That frightened Clara more than anything else.

“Who are they?” she asked.

“My security.”

“Why are they here?”

“Because you were followed.”

Adrian turned toward him.

“By whom?”

Graham ignored the question.

Instead, he walked toward the altar.

Clara stepped backward.

“Stay there.”

He stopped.

“I came because I knew you would eventually find the chapel.”

“How?”

“Your grandfather left clues everywhere.”

“Then why didn't you destroy them?”

Graham looked at her.

“Because I couldn't.”

That answer surprised her.

“Why?”

“Because he was my father.”

The words were quiet.

For the first time, Clara saw something other than control in Graham's expression.

Regret.

Not enough to excuse him.

But enough to explain why he had hesitated.

Adrian noticed it too.

“Then why forge the documents?”

Graham's jaw tightened.

“Because I believed I was preventing something worse.”

“You stole control from Clara.”

“I prevented the fund from being dismantled.”

“It wasn't yours.”

“I know.”

Clara stepped forward.

“You knew it belonged to me.”

“Yes.”

“From the beginning?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you spend years telling everyone I couldn't handle it?”

Graham looked at her.

“Because I was afraid.”

The admission stunned her.

“Of me?”

“Of what would happen if you controlled everything.”

“What would happen?”

“The family would fracture.”

Clara almost laughed.

“It already fractured.”

Graham lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Lucas stepped forward.

“You blamed everyone else for your choices.”

Graham looked at him.

“You were never supposed to find out.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.”

Lucas's voice became bitter.

“You erased my mother.”

“I protected her.”

“You used her.”

Graham closed his eyes.

For a moment, he seemed older.

Much older.

Then Clara noticed something.

“Dad.”

He looked up.

“Why did Grandfather give Marian money?”

Graham's face changed again.

“Because Marian was leaving.”

“Leaving what?”

“This.”

He gestured toward the chapel.

“The family.”

“Why?”

“Because she discovered what I had done.”

Clara looked at the ledger.

“Then why did she keep helping you?”

“Because of Lucas.”

Lucas shook his head.

“You threatened me.”

“I threatened to expose you.”

“You told me my mother abandoned me.”

“I wanted you away from her.”

“Why?”

Graham looked at him.

“Because I was afraid you would tell the truth.”

Clara understood.

Lucas had been the one person capable of connecting everything.

Graham had hidden him because the truth of his existence would expose the secret relationship with Marian.

But that still did not explain the money.

Clara turned to the final page.

The transfer to Marian was dated two days before her grandfather's death.

“Where did this money go?”

Graham answered.

“Marian used it to disappear.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Lucas looked at him.

“You know.”

“I don't.”

“You always know.”

Graham looked toward the chapel doors.

Then he said something unexpected.

“Ask Daniel.”

Clara froze.

“Daniel knows?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

Graham did not answer.

Clara stepped closer.

“You brought us here because you knew we would find the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew Daniel was involved.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel was the one person your grandfather trusted after me.”

Clara stared at him.

“After you?”

“He believed I could still change.”

“You didn't.”

“No.”

Graham looked at the ledger.

“I didn't.”

Outside, a vehicle arrived.

This time, the sound was different.

Police sirens.

The security men turned toward the road.

Graham looked surprised.

Adrian's phone vibrated.

He checked it.

“Daniel.”

Clara's heart jumped.

A message contained only one sentence.

I HAVE SENT EVERYTHING TO THE AUTHORITIES.

Graham saw Clara's face.

“What did he do?”

She showed him the phone.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared in his eyes.

“You don't understand.”

“I think I do.”

“No.”

He stepped toward her.

“If those files are released without context, innocent people will be destroyed.”

Clara stared at him.

“Then tell the truth.”

He looked away.

The chapel doors opened.

Several officers entered.

Behind them stood Daniel Mercer.

Clara stared.

“You're alive.”

Daniel gave a tired smile.

“I've been alive for years.”

Graham looked at him.

“You betrayed me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“I trusted you.”

“You trusted my silence.”

Daniel walked toward Clara.

“I was afraid for a long time.”

He looked at the ledger.

“But I finally realized that fear was exactly what kept the system alive.”

An officer approached.

“Mr. Hart, we need to speak with you.”

Graham did not move.

Then he looked at Clara.

“You wanted the truth.”

“Yes.”

“You'll get it.”

He reached inside his jacket and removed a small USB drive.

“I kept this because I couldn't destroy it.”

Clara looked at it.

“What is it?”

“Everything I ordered Marian and Peter to do.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Then why give it to us?”

Graham looked at his daughter.

“Because I don't want you to inherit my lies.”

The words silenced the room.

He handed the drive to Clara.

An officer took it from her and secured it as evidence.

Then Graham was escorted outside.

Lucas remained standing in the chapel.

He looked at Daniel.

“Did you know my mother was alive?”

Daniel nodded.

“I did.”

“Where is she?”

Daniel looked toward Clara.

“That's the last question.”

Clara felt her stomach tighten.

“Why?”

“Because Marian didn't disappear.”

“Then where is she?”

Daniel hesitated.

“She has been waiting for the right moment to come back.”

Lucas stared.

“Where?”

Daniel gave him an address.

Lucas immediately turned.

“I'll go.”

Clara caught his arm.

“Not alone.”

He looked at her.

“You don't have to come.”

“I know.”

She smiled faintly.

“But you're my brother.”

Lucas's eyes filled with tears.

Neither had planned to say the word.

Brother.

It sounded strange.

But it also sounded right.

Adrian stood beside Clara.

The chapel slowly emptied.

The officers carried away the ledger.

Graham was gone.

For the first time in years, the family structure he had built was no longer under his control.

But Clara knew this wasn't the end.

The ledger had exposed the financial scheme.

The USB drive could establish Graham's involvement.

Daniel could testify.

Peter could testify.

Elaine and June had their own evidence.

Sophie was willing to cooperate.

Yet one person remained.

Marian.

Clara looked toward the dark chapel doorway.

“Let's find her.”
