PART 14 – At David’s Grave, Margaret Finally Told Us Why the Money Had Been Targeted, and the Missing Piece Changed Everything

The cemetery was almost empty when we arrived.

The afternoon light had begun to fade.

Rows of old stones stood beneath tall trees, and dry leaves scraped across the paths whenever the wind moved through the branches.

Margaret stood beside David's grave.

She wasn't running.

She wasn't hiding.

She was simply staring at the stone.

The police approached first.

Sarah and I remained several steps behind.

Ellen walked beside me.

Margaret turned.

Her face looked older than it had in the photograph.

For a moment, she looked directly at me.

“Constance.”

I stopped.

“You know my name.”

“I knew you before David died.”

“You knew him.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“And Victor.”

She looked away.

“Yes.”

The officer asked her to place her hands where they could be seen.

She complied.

“I didn't hurt anyone.”

“Then tell us what happened.”

Margaret looked at David's grave.

“Your husband knew.”

“Knew what?”

“Everything.”

My voice tightened.

“Did Daniel kill him?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“He gave him the medication.”

Ellen gasped.

I felt as though the ground had moved beneath me.

“Why?”

“Because David was going to expose them.”

“Daniel and Victor?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Victor help them?”

“Victor wanted the money.”

“And Daniel?”

“He wanted control.”

I stared at her.

“And you?”

Margaret looked at me.

“I wanted to stop it.”

I didn't believe her immediately.

“You helped them.”

“At first.”

“Why?”

“My husband controlled everything.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“He threatened you?”

Margaret nodded.

“He told me if I ever left him, he would make sure my family lost everything.”

She looked toward Ellen.

“He used your daughter's marriage as another way to keep me quiet.”

Ellen stepped forward.

“What do you mean?”

“Robert owed money.”

Ellen froze.

“How much?”

“Enough that Daniel could control him.”

I looked at Robert.

He had not been the mastermind.

But he had willingly entered the scheme.

Margaret continued.

“Robert came to Daniel looking for help.”

“And Daniel introduced him to Victor?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To find the original policy.”

I asked, “Why was the policy so important?”

Margaret looked at Sarah.

“Because it proved Daniel had arranged the second insurance policy.”

Sarah nodded.

“And the beneficiary?”

“Daniel.”

The officer asked, “Where is the original?”

Margaret hesitated.

“David hid it.”

“We know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You found a copy.”

I felt cold.

“Where is the original?”

Margaret looked toward the cemetery.

“Your husband gave it to me.”

I stared at her.

“You?”

“He knew Daniel would search your house.”

“Why would he trust you?”

“He didn't.”

She looked at David's grave.

“He trusted that I hated Daniel more than I feared him.”

Sarah asked, “Where did you hide it?”

Margaret didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Ellen.

“Your mother deserves to know what happened.”

Ellen nodded.

Margaret took a breath.

“Daniel gave David the medication himself.”

I closed my eyes.

“Then what?”

“He waited.”

“For what?”

“For David to lose consciousness.”

“Did he inject him?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

“He mixed the medication into his drink.”

I remembered the glass of water beside David's bed.

I remembered him saying it tasted strange.

I had assumed it was because of his medication.

Margaret continued.

“Daniel believed the dose would only make him sleep.”

“But he died.”

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel intend to kill him?”

Margaret looked at me.

“I don't know.”

The answer was painful because it was honest.

“He wanted David unconscious long enough to make it appear that his heart had failed.”

Sarah asked, “And Victor?”

“Victor knew.”

“Did he participate?”

“He helped arrange the prescription.”

I looked at Margaret.

“Why didn't you tell the police twenty years ago?”

She looked down.

“Because Daniel threatened me.”

“You could have told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“You watched me mourn my husband.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me believe he died naturally.”

Margaret began crying.

“Yes.”

I felt anger rise.

Not loud.

Not violent.

Just deep.

“You let me live with a lie.”

“I know.”

“And now?”

“Now Daniel is dead.”

I stared.

“How did he die?”

“Accident.”

“Was it?”

Margaret looked away.

“I don't know.”

The officer asked, “Where is Victor?”

“I don't know.”

“Where is the original policy?”

She finally answered.

“At the cemetery.”

I frowned.

“Here?”

She nodded.

“David chose the place.”

She walked toward an older stone several yards away.

Not David's.

His mother's.

Margaret knelt.

Under a loose stone near the base was a small metal container.

The officer retrieved it.

Inside was an envelope.

This time, the seal was intact.

Sarah examined it.

“The original.”

My hands shook.

The document inside confirmed everything.

A second life insurance policy had been issued on David.

Daniel Price was the beneficiary.

Victor Hale's company had processed the application.

But there was something else.

A handwritten addendum from David.

It stated that if he died under suspicious circumstances, the legitimate policy funds would be protected for Constance and later for Ellen's children.

That was why Daniel needed control of my finances.

That was why the guardianship plan mattered.

He couldn't simply take the money.

He needed legal authority.

And the easiest way to obtain it was to make me appear incapable.

I looked at Ellen.

She understood too.

Her face crumpled.

“I almost helped him.”

“You almost helped Robert.”

“And Robert almost helped Daniel.”

“Yes.”

She looked at Margaret.

“What about Victor?”

Margaret shook her head.

“Victor wanted the documents destroyed.”

“Why?”

“Because the policy implicated him.”

The officer's radio sounded.

An investigator reported that Victor's vehicle had been located.

“Where?”

Near the airport.

My heart tightened.

“Is he leaving?”

“We don't know.”

The officer gave instructions.

Margaret remained beside David's grave.

“You should come with us.”

She nodded.

Before she stood, she placed a hand against David's stone.

“I should have told her sooner.”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

We returned to the vehicles.

Ellen sat beside me.

For several minutes, she stared through the window.

“Mom.”

I waited.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

I looked at her.

“I don't know if I can.”

She nodded.

“But I want to make things right.”

“That will take time.”

“I know.”

“Your father would have wanted you to.”

She began crying.

I placed my hand over hers.

It wasn't forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was a beginning.

At the hospital, Sarah reviewed the documents.

The evidence was enough to establish the fraud.

The forged medical records.

The attempted transfers.

The false power of attorney.

The hidden account.

The insurance policy.

The connection between Daniel, Victor, Margaret, and Robert.

But one question remained.

Victor was still missing.

And he knew where everything had been hidden.

Late that night, my phone received another message.

No number.

Just words.

“You found the policy.”

I stared at the screen.

Another message followed.

“But you still don't know who paid for Daniel's silence.”

My stomach tightened.

Sarah read it.

“Don't answer.”

“I won't.”

The phone buzzed again.

This time there was an image.

A photograph of the hospital.

Taken from outside.

My room was visible through the window.

I felt cold.

Someone had been watching me.

Sarah immediately called security.

Then the final message appeared.

“Ask Margaret who she was protecting twenty years ago.”

I looked toward the doorway.

Margaret stood there.

Her face had gone completely white.

I whispered:

“Who were you protecting?”

She closed her eyes.

Then answered:

“My son.”
