PART 11 – The Truth About Evelyn’s Death Changed Everything, and Elena Realized the Conspiracy Had Been Built Around Protecting Her From One Final Betrayal

Elena couldn't move.

Her mother had died when Elena was twenty-two.

For years, the official explanation had been sudden cardiac failure.

Unexpected.

Tragic.

Natural.

She had accepted it because there had been no reason not to.

Now Julian was telling her that it wasn't true.

"You knew."

"I knew she was poisoned."

"For how long?"

"Since the night she died."

Elena stared at him.

"Eight years."

"Yes."

"You let me believe she died naturally for eight years."

"She made me promise."

"Why?"

"Because she believed telling you would put you in danger."

"Was I already in danger?"

"Yes."

"From Daniel?"

"From everyone who wanted control of Vance Capital."

Elena walked toward the window.

Her reflection stared back.

She remembered the hospital room.

The flowers.

The machines.

The doctors speaking quietly.

Julian standing beside her.

Always calm.

Always present.

She had believed he was grieving.

Now she wondered whether he had been hiding something.

"What poison?"

"An anticoagulant."

Elena turned.

"Who had access?"

"Several people."

"Name them."

"Your mother. Me. Her physician. Her housekeeper. Daniel."

"Anyone else?"

"Victoria."

Elena froze.

"Victoria?"

"She visited Evelyn twice during the final month."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Elena remembered Victoria's behavior after her mother's death.

She had attended the funeral.

She had spoken kindly.

She had hugged Elena.

At the time, Elena had been too numb to question it.

Now every memory felt different.

"Did Victoria poison her?"

"I don't know."

"Did you investigate?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"Nothing."

Elena sat down.

The pieces refused to fit.

Daniel.

Victoria.

Blackridge.

Sterling Holdings.

The forged signatures.

Her mother's secret archive.

And the warning that someone inside Vance Capital had betrayed her.

"Why did my mother let the conspiracy continue?"

Julian looked at the floor.

"Because she was building a trap."

"For whom?"

"Daniel."

Elena frowned.

"Explain."

"Your mother knew someone was leaking information."

"Daniel."

"She suspected him."

"Then why not fire him?"

"Because he would disappear."

"And?"

"She wanted evidence."

Elena looked at the files.

"So she let him continue."

"Yes."

"She let him contact Blackridge."

"Yes."

"She let Victoria participate."

"She monitored her."

"She let Alexander get deeper into debt."

Julian nodded.

"Because his debt gave her leverage to trace the network."

Elena closed her eyes.

Everything that had seemed like chaos had been part of a controlled investigation.

But one thing still didn't make sense.

"If my mother was controlling the situation, why did she die?"

Julian looked at her.

"Because someone moved faster."

"Daniel?"

"Possibly."

"Victoria?"

"Possibly."

"Richard?"

"No."

"Why are you certain?"

"Because he didn't know enough."

Elena stood.

"Then who did?"

Julian walked to the archive folder.

He removed a photograph.

It showed Evelyn at a dinner.

Several people sat around the table.

Elena recognized Daniel.

Richard.

Victoria.

And another man.

She stared.

"Who is that?"

Julian answered quietly.

"Marcus Vance."

Elena's face changed.

Her uncle.

Her mother's younger brother.

She hadn't seen him since childhood.

"He's alive?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Europe."

"Why have I never heard from him?"

"Because your mother cut him out."

"Why?"

Julian looked at the photograph.

"Because he was the original investor behind Blackridge."

Elena stared at him.

The room became silent.

"My uncle?"

"Yes."

"Then why did my mother work with him?"

"She didn't."

"Then why is he here?"

"Because he was trying to get back into the company."

Elena took the photograph.

"Did he know about me?"

"Yes."

"Did he know about my inheritance?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't he approach me?"

Julian hesitated.

"He tried."

"When?"

"Several times."

"How?"

"Letters."

"Where are they?"

"Your mother destroyed most of them."

Elena looked at the photograph.

"Most?"

Julian nodded.

"She kept one."

"Where?"

He pointed toward the archive.

They searched for almost an hour.

Finally, Elena found a sealed envelope marked M.V.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

Marcus wrote that Evelyn had stolen what belonged to their family.

He claimed Vance Capital had been built with money he provided.

He claimed Evelyn had manipulated him.

He claimed Elena was being lied to.

At the bottom was a sentence that made Elena stop.

When your mother is gone, you will learn who really owns the Vance name.

Elena folded the letter.

"He's obsessed."

"Yes."

"Is he dangerous?"

"Very."

"Did he poison her?"

"We don't know."

"Could he have?"

"Yes."

Elena looked at Julian.

"What did my mother do with his shares?"

"She bought them."

"All of them?"

"Almost."

"How much did he own?"

"Thirty percent."

Elena's eyes widened.

"Then he still owns something."

"Yes."

"How much?"

"Five percent."

"Where?"

"Through a trust."

Elena stared at the document.

"Why didn't I know?"

"Because your mother wanted you to inherit control without inheriting his conflict."

"She couldn't erase him."

"No."

"She could only hide him."

Julian nodded.

Elena thought about the note.

Your mother's final secret is not who betrayed her. It is why she let them.

Maybe the answer wasn't Daniel.

Maybe it wasn't Victoria.

Maybe the betrayal was larger.

Her mother had deliberately kept Marcus alive inside the financial structure.

She had allowed him to believe he still had a path back.

Why?

Elena called the European number listed in the old file.

A man answered.

"Hello?"

"This is Elena Vance."

Silence.

Then the man said:

"I wondered when you'd call."

Elena's pulse quickened.

"You know who I am."

"Of course."

"Did you know my mother?"

"I knew her better than anyone."

"Did you poison her?"

The man laughed softly.

"No."

"Then who did?"

"You're asking the wrong question."

"What is the right one?"

"Why would Evelyn let herself be poisoned?"

Elena went still.

"What?"

"Your mother was not careless."

"You're saying she knew?"

"She knew someone was trying to kill her."

"Then why didn't she stop them?"

"Because she wanted you to inherit the truth."

Elena's fingers tightened around the phone.

"Where are you?"

"Closer than you think."

The line disconnected.

Elena looked at Julian.

"Marcus?"

He nodded.

"He knows."

"What?"

"That I'm investigating."

Julian looked worried.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Elena watched him.

He ended the call.

"What happened?"

"Margaret has been found."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"At a hospital."

Elena grabbed her coat.

They drove immediately.

Margaret was conscious when Elena entered.

She looked frightened.

"Margaret."

The older woman reached for her hand.

"Your mother was right."

"About what?"

"She told me never to trust the person who brings the final answer."

Elena looked toward Julian.

Margaret followed her gaze.

"No."

She shook her head.

"Not him."

Elena leaned closer.

"Then who?"

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Your uncle."

"Marcus?"

Margaret nodded.

"He was the one who arranged the poison."

Julian stepped forward.

"Are you certain?"

Margaret looked at him.

"I saw him."

"When?"

"The night Evelyn died."

Elena felt her throat tighten.

"What happened?"

Margaret's breathing became uneven.

"Marcus came to the house."

"Why?"

"He wanted Evelyn to sign over the remaining shares."

"She refused."

"Yes."

"Then?"

Margaret closed her eyes.

"He threatened her."

"Did he poison her?"

Margaret nodded.

"But your mother had already planned for it."

Elena stared.

"What do you mean?"

Margaret opened her eyes.

"She knew she would die."

Silence.

"She told me that if anything happened, I had to wait until you were ready."

Elena's voice broke.

"Ready for what?"

Margaret reached beneath her pillow.

She pulled out a tiny key.

"The last archive."

Elena took it.

Margaret whispered:

"Your mother didn't leave you a fortune."

Elena looked confused.

"She left you a choice."
