PART 13 – In Geneva, Marcus Offered Elena the Missing Piece, But His Bargain Revealed a Final Betrayal Her Mother Had Never Been Able to Prevent

The plane landed shortly after dawn.

Geneva was still gray beneath a low ceiling of clouds, the mountains barely visible beyond the airport glass.

Elena walked through the terminal beside Julian without speaking.

She had slept less than two hours.

Neither of them mentioned it.

A driver was waiting outside.

No sign.

No name.

Only a message on Elena's phone.

Hotel Beau-Rivage. Private entrance. Eleven o'clock.

She deleted the message.

Julian noticed.

"Marcus?"

"Yes."

"Did he say who arranged the meeting?"

"No."

They entered the car.

The driver did not introduce himself.

Elena watched the city pass through the window.

Elegant buildings.

Wet pavement.

People carrying umbrellas.

Everything looked ordinary.

That was what unsettled her.

Her mother's conspiracy had existed beneath ordinary life for years.

People went to work.

Children went to school.

Couples argued over dinner.

And somewhere underneath all of it, money moved quietly between accounts.

At the hotel, security escorted them through a private entrance.

The meeting room was on the second floor.

Marcus Vance was already there.

Elena had seen photographs of him.

The photographs had made him look younger.

In person, he looked tired.

His silver hair was combed neatly.

His suit was expensive but understated.

He stood when Elena entered.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Marcus smiled.

"You look exactly like her."

Elena remained standing.

"That's what everyone says."

"Because it's true."

"Did you kill her?"

Marcus's smile disappeared.

"No."

"Did you order her poisoning?"

"No."

"Did you know she was going to die?"

He looked at Julian.

"She told you."

Elena's eyes hardened.

"Answer me."

Marcus sat down.

"I knew someone intended to harm her."

"And you did nothing."

"I tried."

"How?"

"I warned her."

"She already knew."

Marcus lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

Elena took the chair opposite him.

"Then why are we here?"

"Because you have only part of the story."

"I have enough."

"No."

He opened a folder.

"You have your mother's version."

Elena looked at him.

"That is usually a problem."

Marcus almost smiled.

"Your mother was brilliant."

"I know."

"She was also stubborn."

"I know."

"And she made enemies."

"You were one."

"I was her brother."

"That doesn't answer the question."

Marcus leaned back.

"We disagreed about what Vance Capital should become."

"You wanted control."

"I wanted protection."

"For yourself."

"For the family."

Elena said nothing.

Marcus opened the folder.

"Blackridge was not originally mine."

Elena's expression changed.

"Daniel?"

"Yes."

"Then why did everyone say you controlled it?"

"Because I financed part of it."

"With your own money?"

"Some."

"Whose was the rest?"

Marcus looked at Julian.

"Ask him."

Julian's jaw tightened.

Elena turned toward him.

"Did you finance Blackridge?"

"No."

Marcus laughed quietly.

"Still protecting her."

Julian remained silent.

Elena looked between them.

"Both of you are running out of reasons to keep secrets."

Marcus slid a document across the table.

Elena read it.

It was an old financing agreement.

The lender was Vance Capital.

The borrower was a company controlled by Marcus.

But the funds had been routed through several entities.

At the bottom was Evelyn's signature.

Elena looked up.

"My mother financed you."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because she wanted to monitor me."

Marcus's voice became bitter.

"She never trusted me."

"Should she have?"

"No."

The answer surprised Elena.

Marcus continued.

"I was ambitious."

"You were dangerous."

"Both can be true."

He pushed another document toward her.

This one was from eight years ago.

A Blackridge acquisition proposal.

At the top was Daniel Cross's name.

Below it was a handwritten note from Evelyn.

Do not stop them yet.

Elena's heart tightened.

"She really did allow this."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because she believed she could control the investigation."

"Could she?"

Marcus shook his head.

"Not completely."

He looked at Julian.

"That's what killed her."

Julian's expression hardened.

"Don't."

Marcus ignored him.

"Your mother discovered Daniel had begun working with someone else."

"Victoria."

"No."

Elena stared.

Marcus said the name.

"Margaret."

Silence.

Elena's face changed.

"Margaret?"

"She wasn't loyal to your mother."

"She was."

"At first."

"She protected her."

"Yes."

"Then why?"

Marcus folded his hands.

"Because Daniel threatened her family."

Elena remembered Margaret's fear.

The warning.

The hospital.

"You knew?"

"I knew."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Margaret was trying to protect you."

Elena shook her head.

"This makes no sense."

Marcus leaned forward.

"Your mother discovered that Daniel was using Margaret to access certain accounts."

Julian finally spoke.

"That's not true."

Marcus looked at him.

"Then tell her."

Julian was silent.

Elena turned toward him.

"Julian."

He took a breath.

"Margaret had access."

"Yes."

"But she was not working for Daniel."

"Then what was she doing?"

"She was feeding him false information."

Elena stared.

"She was a double agent."

"Yes."

Marcus nodded.

"Exactly."

Elena looked back at him.

"Then why did you say she betrayed my mother?"

"Because she did."

"How?"

"She gave Daniel one piece of real information."

"What information?"

Marcus's expression became grim.

"Your mother's location."

Elena froze.

"On the night she died."

The room seemed to lose its air.

Margaret had not merely witnessed the poisoning.

She had unknowingly helped Daniel find Evelyn.

Elena closed her eyes.

"She didn't know what he intended."

"No."

"Then why did she blame herself?"

"Because she eventually learned."

Julian looked away.

Elena understood.

Margaret had carried guilt for years.

That was why she had hidden.

That was why her mother had instructed her to wait.

Elena opened her eyes.

"Who poisoned my mother?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"Daniel."

Julian looked at him.

"You're certain?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"Because I was there."

Elena stared.

"You saw him?"

"I saw him enter the house."

"And then?"

"I left."

"Why?"

"Your mother told me to."

Elena's voice became sharp.

"Why would she tell you to leave?"

"Because she knew what was coming."

Marcus looked at her.

"She wanted me to survive."

"She still protected you."

"She was my sister."

For the first time, Elena saw grief in his face.

Not calculation.

Not arrogance.

Grief.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

"Because Evelyn made me promise."

"Why?"

"Because she knew Daniel would kill anyone who could prove what happened."

Elena looked at Julian.

"Did you know?"

"No."

"Did my mother tell you?"

"Not everything."

Marcus smiled sadly.

"She trusted neither of us completely."

Elena looked down.

That was the pattern.

Her mother had built layers around everyone.

No one knew the entire plan.

Not Marcus.

Not Julian.

Not Margaret.

Not even Elena.

Perhaps that had been the only way Evelyn could keep the truth alive.

Marcus pushed one final document across the table.

"This is why I asked you to come."

Elena opened it.

A trust agreement.

Her mother's signature.

Marcus's signature.

And another name.

Elena's.

The date was two months before Evelyn's death.

"What is this?"

"Your mother's final trust."

"I already inherited Vance Capital."

"Not everything."

Elena read the document again.

A separate holding structure had been established.

Its assets were enormous.

But there was a condition.

The assets could not be transferred until Elena identified the people responsible for Evelyn's death and dismantled their network.

Elena looked up.

"I've done that."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"Daniel."

"Yes."

"Victoria."

"Partly."

"Blackridge."

"Partly."

"Then who is left?"

Marcus looked at Julian.

Elena followed his gaze.

Julian stood completely still.

"Julian?"

Marcus said nothing.

Elena's voice became quiet.

"What did you do?"

Julian closed his eyes.

"Nothing that betrayed your mother."

"That's not an answer."

Marcus spoke.

"Julian did something worse."

Elena turned.

"What?"

"He knew Evelyn was going to die."

The words struck harder than anything else.

Julian looked at Elena.

"I knew she was in danger."

"You didn't tell me."

"I couldn't."

"You could have."

"She ordered me not to."

"Why?"

"Because she wanted Daniel to believe he had succeeded."

Elena stared.

"You're saying my mother allowed herself to die."

"No."

Julian shook his head.

"She believed she could survive."

Marcus interrupted.

"She was wrong."

Elena stood.

"Enough."

She looked at both men.

"My mother died."

Her voice shook.

"Everyone keeps explaining why she chose to risk herself."

She wiped her eyes.

"But nobody is telling me why no one stopped her."

Neither answered.

Elena walked to the window.

Outside, Lake Geneva was calm beneath the gray sky.

She remembered her mother telling her that roots grew where nobody could see them.

Perhaps this was what she meant.

The truth had roots.

Deep ones.

And Elena had finally reached them.

Her phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Your meeting is over."

Elena froze.

"Who is this?"

"You should ask Marcus what he kept from you."

The line ended.

She turned.

Marcus was already standing.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing."

"Then why would someone say that?"

Marcus looked toward Julian.

Julian's face had gone pale.

Elena saw it.

"Julian?"

He didn't answer.

She stepped toward him.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Julian finally spoke.

"Daniel has someone inside Vance Capital."

"Who?"

He looked at her.

"I don't know."

Marcus shook his head.

"That's not true."

Elena turned toward him.

"Then tell me."

Marcus said one sentence.

"You've been looking for a traitor inside Vance Capital."

He paused.

"The traitor has been looking for you."
