My father told me not to attend New Year’s Eve because, “You make everyone uncomfortable.”

So I spent the final night of the year alone.

At exactly 12:01 a.m., my sister called, her voice shaking.

“What did you do? Dad just saw the news!”

I looked toward the television and answered quietly.

“He found out too late.”

Then she whispered two words that changed everything.

“They’re outside.”

My father had banned me from our  family’s  New Year’s Eve party because, as he put it, “You make everyone uncomfortable.”

The message arrived at 6:14 p.m. while I stood in my Chicago apartment holding a bottle of champagne I had bought for dinner.

Naomi answered.
