The door would not open.
The officers immediately tried the handle.
Gerald had locked us inside from the other side.
“Gerald!” Gabriel shouted.
No response.
Robert examined the hinges.
“There's another way out.”
He moved toward the window.
I remained beside the hidden compartment.
The wooden blue box was smaller than I expected.
Its paint had faded along the corners.
I remembered seeing it once as a child.
Or thought I did.
My mother had always told me it was empty.
Now I understood why.
She had been hiding it in plain sight.
I opened the lid.
Inside were letters tied together with faded ribbon.
A small key.
A cassette tape.
And a photograph.
I picked up the photograph first.
It showed my mother, Robert, and a much younger Gerald standing outside Lawson Holdings.
Between them stood another man.
Daniel Mercer.
The date was twenty-two years earlier.
On the back my mother had written:
They think the money is the secret. It isn't.
I unfolded the first letter.
My mother's handwriting filled the page.
Chloe,
If you ever find this, then I failed to keep the past away from you.
I had to make a choice between telling you the truth and keeping you alive.
I chose your life.
My eyes blurred.
Gabriel stood beside me.
I continued.
The Lawson family was not the beginning of the crime. They were only part of it.
The money came from contracts designed to disappear.
But the real secret was what happened to the people who discovered where it went.
I looked at Robert.
He nodded.
My mother had named six people.
Daniel Mercer.
Robert Lawson.
Gerald Lawson.
Two government contractors.
And herself.
One by one, each had discovered the same network.
Only some had survived.
A noise came from the hallway.
Gerald's voice.
“Chloe, you have ten minutes.”
Robert shouted, “You're finished!”
Gerald laughed.
“You've said that for twenty years.”
I continued reading.
My mother explained that Gerald had not created the network.
He had inherited access to it through Daniel Mercer.
Gerald learned how to manipulate the accounts and began diverting money.
Robert eventually discovered the scheme.
At first, he participated.
Later, he tried to expose it.
My mother became the person who collected the evidence.
Then came the part I feared most.
She had written about Gabriel.
Gabriel was eighteen when he discovered what his father was doing.
He confronted Gerald.
Instead of protecting his son, Gerald forced him to help move documents.
Gabriel obeyed because Gerald threatened to destroy his mother.
I looked at Gabriel.
“You were trapped.”
He nodded.
“But you still knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why did my mother trust you?”
“Because I helped her.”
“How?”
He looked at the letter.
“She asked me to keep the blue box hidden.”
My breath caught.
“You knew where it was?”
“No.”
“Then what did you hide?”
He looked at the photograph.
“The key.”
I picked up the small key.
“This?”
Gabriel nodded.
“My mother gave it to me the night she died.”
Robert moved closer.
“What does it open?”
Gabriel shook his head.
“I don't know.”
I looked at the key.
There was a tiny number engraved on it.
17.
The same number appeared on the cassette tape.
I placed the tape into an old recorder found inside the box.
The machine clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then my mother's voice came through.
“Chloe, if you're hearing this, I need you to understand something.”
I closed my eyes.
Hearing her voice after six years nearly broke me.
“I know Gerald believes he has won.”
A pause.
“He hasn't.”
The recording continued.
“I have placed the final evidence somewhere none of them would think to search.”
Robert whispered, “The house.”
My mother's voice continued.
“The person I trusted to protect it is the person Gerald believes he destroyed.”
The recording ended.
Silence.
Gabriel looked at Robert.
“Who?”
Robert shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Then we heard a knock.
Three times.
From the wall.
Everyone froze.
Three more knocks.
I looked at the floor.
My mother used three taps.
I moved toward the wall.
“Mom?”
No answer.
Robert pressed his ear against it.
“There is a space behind this.”
The officers broke through the wooden panel.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
It led into a hidden room.
Inside stood a desk.
On the desk was an old laptop.
And beside it was a stack of documents.
The first page carried a government seal.
The second contained names.
The third contained account numbers.
The fourth was a confession.
Signed by Gerald.
I stared at it.
“Why would he sign this?”
Robert looked at the page.
“He didn't.”
I examined the signature.
It was nearly identical to Gerald's.
But not quite.
Gabriel stepped closer.
“This was forged.”
“By whom?”
Robert picked up another page.
“Daniel.”
I frowned.
“He died.”
Robert nodded.
“That's what we were told.”
The hidden room suddenly seemed much smaller.
“You're saying Daniel survived?”
Robert's eyes remained on the documents.
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
“I don't know.”
A sound came from behind us.
The bedroom door opened.
Gerald stood there.
He had somehow entered without anyone hearing him.
The officers raised their weapons.
“Don't move!”
Gerald stopped.
He looked at the hidden room.
Then at the blue box.
His expression collapsed.
“You found it.”
I held up my mother's letter.
“You lied to me.”
Gerald's eyes moved toward Gabriel.
“He told you everything?”
“Not enough.”
Gerald laughed softly.
“Then you don't understand.”
“Explain it.”
He looked at Robert.
“You betrayed me.”
Robert said nothing.
“You took the evidence.”
“I saved Chloe's mother.”
“You destroyed my family.”
Robert stepped forward.
“You destroyed it yourself.”
Gerald looked at me.
“Your mother was going to expose everyone.”
“She should have.”
“She would have died.”
“She did.”
His face tightened.
“I didn't kill her.”
I stared at him.
“Then who did?”
Gerald's silence lasted too long.
I felt a chill.
“Who?”
He finally answered.
“Daniel.”
Robert stepped forward.
“Liar.”
Gerald shook his head.
“Daniel was the one who ordered the hit.”
I looked at the documents.
“Why?”
“Because your mother discovered the final account.”
“What account?”
Gerald pointed toward the laptop.
“The one that proves where the money really came from.”
I opened it.
A password screen appeared.
I looked at the key marked 17.
Then at the laptop.
There was a small slot on its side.
I inserted the key.
The computer unlocked.
A folder opened.
Inside were hundreds of scanned documents.
Then one file.
Named CHLOE.
I clicked it.
The screen displayed a photograph.
It was me.
As a child.
Standing beside my mother.
And behind us stood a man I recognized.
I stopped breathing.
It was not Gerald.
It was Daniel Mercer.
Alive.
Older.
But unmistakable.
A message appeared beneath the photograph.
He has been watching you since childhood.
I looked at Robert.
“Where is he?”
Before Robert could answer, the house lights went out.
A gunshot exploded downstairs.
Everyone ducked.
Gerald disappeared through the hidden passage.
Gabriel grabbed my hand.
“Run.”
We moved toward the back exit.
Another shot.
Then a man's voice echoed through the house.
“Chloe!”
I knew that voice.
It belonged to the man in the photograph.
Daniel Mercer.
And he was calling my name.
